So I'm planning out my 2012 trip, state by state and it's really hard. I've never planned out a mostly dirt road trip and it's a lot of work so I'm asking for help. Here is my basic criteria / story / goals.

1) I will be coming from Moab heading towards Denver
2) I want to see Mesa Verde but I'm not 100% set on this.
3) I really want to ride up Mt Evans, nearly 100% set on this.
4) I'm hoping to ride Ophir pass and some others, but not "wasting" a ton of time.
4 again) Fill in the gaps between all of this with as much dirt, non-highway, scenic cool roads as possible. A guesstimate is 5-6 days I can allow between entering CO and getting to Denver.

Me: Riding a loaded 1150 GS, my first dirt experience but by the time I get to CO I should have enough experience of riding through nearly all of Utah (hopefully) on dirt as well as prep miles home on dirt roads. I want a challenge but I will be alone (tag a longs welcome!!!)

Ideally I'd love to see an editable google map but typing stuff up is much appreciated! I'm hoping to post up a google map once I get all of the input for future riders to use as help for their trips.

For your advice and service I am offering unlimited imaginary gifts, imaginary bags of money or any other imaginary wish you can think of. As long as it's imaginary, I'll pay whatever you ask as long as it seems reasonable...:lol3 My hopeful payback for this help will be to post the google map that can be used for future riders in their trip planning.

I need 4-5 riders with two-up experience to carry photographers/TV for the Portland, Oregon Rock-n-Roll marathon Sunday May 20 from 7:00a until 11:00a.

These are well compensated positions for rider and bike plus a chance to have some fun on a closed course in a very family oriented event.

** You must be extremely comfortable and experienced riding two-up at very slow speeds. **

The definition of slow speed is slightly faster than walking. The pro runners go much faster but we spend a lot of time covering the citizen / amateur fields too. Riding two-up means you will likely have a full sized adult male on the back of your bike squirming around to get the best shots at 3-5 mph. We spend just as much time stopped and waiting for our photographers to get a preselected shot from the side of the road.

Your bike must be in excellent working condition, serviced and clean. Helmets and full safety gear are required as well. No loud mufflers! If your drivers license record reads longer than a menu at a Chinese restaurant or you have a DUI history that would not work.

Prior experience riding in organized events is a plus of course but anyone with good two-up / slow speed experience can do it.

Please contact me directly ASAP for complete details, NOT via this forum or PMs. My email address is:

Thank you for your consideration

Note to Mods: I posted this in this section since it is related to the Pacific Northwest and motorcycling. If there's a preferred location or you don't want this post just let me know or feel free to relocate it. I'd rather see a fellow ADV inmates get the $$$ than random referrals from a bike shop.

I would spend countless hours using my imagination with these. They've followed me wherever I went. You can see the wear & tear on many, some have been painted over the original colors.

The '60 Buick Electra police car is the oldest, made by Husky in G.B. I found it buried in a neighbor's backyard.

Anyone remember any specific ones?

"We have a wacky theory for why people like to ride motorcycles, and it goes like this: The act of riding is a form of meditation, because the concentration that's required to safely ride a motorcycle tends to focus the mind in a way that eliminates other mental distractions that might interfere with the mission.
This creates a single-mindedness that, in effect, displaces the continuous stream of thoughts that normally flow through our consciousness.
Thoughts about what to eat, who to meet, and worries about the common stresses of everyday life, such as pressures from work and home, disappear from our minds during the ride, because the concentration that's necessary to focus on the ride pushes those thoughts far into the background.
The result is that the mind becomes refreshed after a ride just like it would after a session of formal meditation or a relaxing vacation.
Just like some people get "hooked" on meditation, motorcyclists get hooked on riding because of the mental relief that it brings. I wouldn't be surprised if someone discovers that endorphins or something are released during the act of riding. I'm sure you've noticed that you can't "zone out" on a motorcycle like you can when driving a car."

Blue Cross Blue Shield Rant

Okay, I've concluded that despite the ads and 'right talk', Blue Cross Blue Shield isn't really interested in us being active folks. Activities like hiking, climbing, flying, motorbiking require some flexibility (and promote health), and BCBS won't have any of that.

I've been using the same glucometer for several years now, from Freestyle. The whole package is compact and simple enough I can stick it in my flight suit pocket, motorcycle jacket pocket, even a small fanny pack or chalk bag for climbing. Blue Cross Blue Shield decided they won't cover the test strips anymore, requiring me to get a new glucometer. All four of the models they will support are significantly larger than the Freestyle I was using. I called them and told them this really won't work for me. The new device and package doesn't compactly fit in a flight suit, etc.; and that means I won't be able to easily take it along when I might need it at work. I asked that they cover the test strips for the Freestyle I am already using.

The service rep was outstanding (a woman named Darlene). She bent over backwards for 45 minutes trying to find me a good solution. But Blue Cross will have none of it. I have to use one of the four devices they promote, or they won't cover it. They would rather that those of us who need really compact glucometers do without, or at least check less often. I checked online and the price of strips for their approved devices and the Freestyle are the same! This is simply promoting poor patient compliance, and is poor patient care.

I tried to point out to them that if an educated, English-speaking customer like me has problems with their rigid, unaccommodating policy - I can assure them that many, many of our patients (I am an ER and flight nurse/medic) who don't feel empowered to argue because of language or cultural barriers will simply walk away and not properly take care of themselves. Despite talking a good line, Blue Cross Blue Shield does not promote good health.

Interesting that right after this, I vented to my neighbor who is an ICU and surgical recovery nurse. Her husband is my physician. Her immediate response was 'Oh, Blue Cross is just awful.' Personally, I'm very sorry that LANL switched from United Health (with whom I never had problems) to BCBS. If there is any way to get them to switch back, I will advocate that. Meanwhile, potential customer beware! If you are an active person who may need some accommodation from your insurer to continue or promote your activities and health - Blue Cross Blue Shield New Mexico is not your friend.

Ahhhh... it's a nice big space, but I wondered if anyone had already installed a Scott Oiler. The company has an excellent reputation and this modification seems quite popular. I have a friend with a Suzuki dual sport bike with the oiler and a friend with a touring bike... different systems, but they like the results.

So. BMW has a Scott Oiler just for the f800gs... should I do it?
Might be suitable for big bikes. I will be on my 450. I've only ridden a small portion of this loop in the past, so don't ask me how hard it will be.

I'm thinking food stop in Jerome!

Counter-clockwise loop direction.
