St. Louis Area Tag-o-Rama

It seems some riders on Missouri Tag-o-Rama would like a more St. Louis centered Tag-o-Rama that would include Illinois. I agree. So here we go.

The STL Area Tag-o-Rama

Let's keep the rules simple.

#1 - To "grab" the tag. Find the tag, and take a photo of your bike at the location.

#2 - To "drop" the tag. Take a photo of your bike at a new location, The first person to post the grabbed tag gets to "drop" (post) the next tag. To keep the game moving you need to "drop" the new tag immediately. If not the previous tag is still valid for others. Give a few hints so the next person can figure out where the tag is located. Try to place the tags in interesting locations, maybe a bit of history that can be found down some nice twisties.

#3 - Tag must be findable and accessible by the public and by an average rider on a street bike. Gravel and dirt roads are fine, single track trails and deep water crossings are not!

#4 - File photos are permitted for dropping a new tag. You still must ride to the tag to grab it. If using a file photo, the same bike that is used for grabbing the existing tag must be in the tag drop photo, so we know it is somewhere you rode to, not some old photo your dad gave you.

#5 - The location of the tags must be no more than 150 miles (crow flight, not road miles) from the Gateway Arch.

#6 - No whining.

There were some issues on the Missouri Tag-o-Rama about including Illinois. So the first tag here is a compromise.

It's the only church in Illinois that is on the Missouri (west) side of the Mississippi River

I think this is a great idea, it will be nice to have another tag to be on the lookout for. Here is a map showing a 150 mile (as the crow flies) radius from the arch. Hopefully this will be an easy and helpful reference.

Okay, here's my bike at the Church. In Kaskaskia, Illinois. West of the Mississippi. The church was founded in 1675. There is also a bell there that has a great history. The Liberty Bell of the West. Given to the church by King Louis XV of France in 1744.

Located 29 miles due south of the Church. Another church. But while this church is nothing spectacular, what is behind the church surely is. A Grotto. Complete with waterfall. I can only put one picture per tag so I will put a picture of the Grotto below.

I know the place of the new tag. I was there last two weeks ago.



That grotto was built around a fascinating geological feature called a karst window.

I think we stood in about the same place for the picture.

I live in Randolph County. Home of all kinds of historical goodies. I spent alot of time on Kaskaskia Island in mid 90's I worked for the company that was contracted to rebuild the bell shrine after the flood of 93.

They did ring the bell once every 4th of July, but haven't since 92 for fear of cracking it worse than it is. I rang it in 94 "just to hear what it sounded like" :eek1 as a kid working to rebuild the shrine. It was a very warm and rich sound. I remember being surprised at the quality of the tone. So I may be the last person to ring this historic bell, which is much older than the Liberty Bell. Im for sure the guy that cut all the t & g ceiling boards.

I was ready to jump into the game and get my own tag. I went past the island twice in the last week on 4 wheels. Today on my way back from Kentucky Lake my bike broke. Head gasket is probable cause
