Go to page 19 of the April 2012 issue of Motorcyclist Magazine. They list a 2006 R1100GS as the motorcycle that changed Neil Peart's life. I'd say that it would change a lot of lives to have a 2006 R1100GS. Motorcyclist used to be a great publication back when Mitch ran the show, now its not so much. I mean how freaking simple can you get, and don't placate me with a "Yeah we were just looking to see if you were watching line". ADV has caught a lot of crap from Motorcyclist over the years, now its time to push back. This issue came with a paper cover saying boldly "This is your last issue" Yes it is. and I recommend you do the same now that the publisher, Marty Estes is also gone. (pg. 47)
What do they have against ADV? I've got no idea since I don't read it. MCN every month does me pretty well, and if I get bored I grab one of the British mags.
Totally agreed. And the photography is brilliant. I look forward to it every month. But I will say that Hell For Leather, though not a print mag, and not as exhaustive, is doing damn fine reporting for an American organization. If other folks are interested in Bike, I picked up my subscription here after some scrounging: http://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/store/displaybrand.asp?os=Y&sid=4263 39 quid works out to about USD $62 right now. It's more than worth it to me.
It seems that US moto mags cater more to their advertisers than the people who read them. I'm getting fed up with Rider. It used to be about real motorcyclist who ride their bikes, now it's turning into another cruiser and trike mag.
Im done with Motorcyclist too. Thinking of a script to RoadRunner...any feedback on THAT one? Perhaps Neil Peart's bike is running like it has 100 fewer cc's because its hauling gallons of Macallan's around!!!??
I wrote Catterson about all the errors in the short little column on NP and he blamed it on the "art director". As for Road Runner, I think it's a good magazine that focuses on rides/routes, etc. It always includes ride route cards on the last couple of pages that are made to go in the map pocket on your tank bag. Pretty cool.
^^ They list a 2006 R1100GS as the motorcycle that changed Neil Peart's life. The R1100 GS was produced from 1994-1998. Maybe they should have said the motorcycle that saved Neil Peart's life.
I agree with op. I just wrote to cancel my sub yesterday. Ever since Mitch left, the writing has gone downhill, and the content not as rich. Who is editing these days if anyone?! It's not just a typo. They posted a pic of a Frenchman crying as the Nazis entered Paris as an example of the great depression. (yes I knew that pic before it showed up on the mail collumn). The fact checking sucks, content low brow, and evidently each contributing writer self-edits! No more Motorcyclist for me.
Thanks!.....Now all I need is a Tank Bag!!!! Too much of a PITA to get to the gas cap with a Tank Bag, IMHO....plus they dont do much good for the paint!
I think Roadrunner is modeled after a German moto-mag, and the German moto-mag is very ride-report oriented. Road Runner is hosting an event here on the east coast. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=754168 When I was younger, and before Al Gore invented the internet, I ravenously consumed all the motorcycle magazines I could get my grubby little fingers on. I even read the ads! When Sport Rider came into being, it was Nirvana. At the track, it was easy to root for Nick Ienatsch on his smoky 250cc two-stroke, or when he rode that Australian contraption because it felt like I KNEW him. Once I discovered the English mags, though, man, my enjoyment of reading went up ten fold. Anyways, yeah, I think the best days of Motorcyclist are behind us. Or maybe its me, maybe my outlook changed a bit? I dunno.....
It's a small thing but the BMW GS1100 was available, newly titled from 1994-1999. 1998 was not the end of the line.
Catterson seems as though he must have a gratuitous mug shot in every article, and the editorials and even the feature stories have gone down to the point where maybe I lack a sense of humor but I honestly think the authors took a big hit of acid and jotted down what they thought people would care to read about. Roadrunner.... Got my second issue the other day (was given a script for xmas) and it's very down to earth, to the point, and seems to cover a wide range of subjects. Yes it's touring oriented and is called roadrunner and therefore no dirt riding stuff but some adventure touring. I'm happy so far.
