I'm a long term BMW guy (1100GS, currently 800GS) who is wanting to get a KTM 990 Adventure in Portland, Or. I can get a 2012 new 990 from the local dealers for between 12999 and 14999 or a used 2008 with 17000 miles from a used car dealer for 9995. Any advice? Are the 2012's better? I'm a little concerned about buying a bike with 17000 miles. Thanks Steve
I would get a new one. If cost is a issue ebay has some for less. IN 2007 the DEALER cost was like $11,100 for a 990 adv
If you can get a new bike with a warranty for only 30% more than one that's been ridden for 5 seasons I'd say go that way. There are some small improvements made every year, IIRC there were some updates to the oiling system and cases in 2009.
There is nothing wrong with an '08 Adventure if you find and pick the right one. My '08 that I bought a year ago from Oregon had Akro's, crash bars, Happy Trails rack, heated grips, rear KTM topcase and 10K miles. It was less than your quote. I also got the stock seat and windscreens as well as the gel and touring windscreen. The PO was meticulous with maintenance and it was a far better bike than the newer/more expensive models. Edit: I forgot about the Cycra ProBends and I'm sure there's some other upgraded bits escaping my memory. My point is that there are very well sorted used bikes available for far less than it will take to sort them yourself. YMMV but you can do very well if you know what you want. BTW, I still have the '02 GS, it's also well farkled and runs like a scalded cat. But I would never abuse it in the dirt the way I will run the Adventure.
Used car dealer? Offer 6, settle for 7. http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/trade-in/2008/ktm/990-adventure/232373/ http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/retail/2008/ktm/990-adventure/232373/
