I recently made the acquaintance of the kerncountykid, Trevor Ware, an inmate who's ride report, "Go west young man", where he rode a homebuilt CB550 from Arkansas to California, has inspired many, including myself, to take the plunge. Trevor was hit by a drunk driver and left for dead in the middle of I40 back in September, and is now confined to a wheelchair with massive brain injuries. I'm leaving in the morning to follow a good bit of Trevor's route solo on a 91 Honda Nighthawk, meeting up with a couple of fellow Arkansans on DR650s somewhere around Colorado.
Subscribed! Good cause truly a terrible thing that happened to him. http://kerncountykid.blogspot.com/?m=1
Loaded and ready to ride after I take care of some business this morning: And the video that got me off my fat butt and pointed west... http://vimeo.com/m/34638170 ... And a place where you can donate to Trevor's recovery https://www.everribbon.com/ribbon/view/8352 It's time to ride.
WE will keep an eye open for you an your friends if you come over Wolf Creek pass on your way west. Just check in if in need. Vaya Con Dios
Took off from Little Rock today, cut across Oklahoma in 102 heat, no fun. My intention was to run up through Tulsa and pay a visit to the local Honda dealer and let them know how much negative press their rudeness garnered them, but my Dumas brothers are up in that area heading west and warned me about the storms and flooding. I headed towards Elk City until I saw the same storms approaching, so I'm holed up here until the storms pass, catch a few winks and head northwest in the AM. I'm too dang old to be sleeping on the ground, but can't find suitable trees to hang the Hennesy, so sweet picnic table it is... I'll be paying for this tomorrow.
A little more on the RV park, there is a washateria around back with a covered porch just perfect for multiple bikes, with washer and dryer and HOT SHOWERS! I pulled In there around 11, couldn't find anyone to pay( I tried, not wanting bad karma), so I got up at 0500, scalded myself and skedaddled. The name is Elk Creek RV park on Elk City, if you been an emergency place to stop; 3" of rain last night and the bike stayed dry, as did I.
Finally started getting my groove on; today cannot be described; made it across the Panhandle, I almost understand why people feel the need to "be" Texan. Rolled hard until I hit Clayton NM, was putting my rain gear when I saw this guy sitting in front of the fire station: His name is TJ, the guys let him man the station with his phone if they need to run an errand, we talked about Trevor and wheelchair etiquette, great guy. Met this guy coming out of the local library; he told me they have "sexy" books in there, but his daughter won't let him check them out
This is where the story turns seriously surreal; spot a car on the side of the road in nowheresville NM, flashers on, so I stop to render assistance. Turns out not only are they from Little Rock, they know Trevor, she's an opera singer(!) in a local metal band(!) Iron Tongue, who actually performed at one of Trevor's fundraisers. What are the odds? They are heading to Capulin volcano, and so am I...
