Seasons Greetings Kiwi ADV riders. I used to do the odd trail ride with my Son, started off with a KDX 200 and he had a XR 80, 100,200 and then I bought a 1997 XR 400 with the plan to do some more trail riding....well that was 2 years ago and the old XR has done one lap of the block...:cry
Its road legal but following a bit of internet research I picked up some 'XR 600' ones on TM that had good rubber on them.....by all accounts ' a bolt on"......
As usual scope creep set in....rear wheel came off.....hmmm may as well lube the suspension.....having read all the horrors of the swing arm bolt on ADV rider I thought it was a give it would be seized.....well no it wasn't tapped thru easily....
Lubed it all up and the rear wheel bolted right up using the old spacers, the caliper was however seized....... ( puts to one side)
Took off the front wheel and removed the disc.....oh dear.....it doesn't fit..... its 240 in diameter which according to the innernet......fits from 250-600....bolt holes are smaller.
futher googling and I'm thinking it may have had a 250 wheel fitted.....
Oh well.....at this stage I'll just swap over the tyre....
    Anyone confirm my theory?:ear

Well swapped over the front tyre using the old time method of tyre irons and swearing :1drink

Thats when scope creep set in...... " I wonder when the fork oil was changed.....if ever"

Did a Google search....nearly every post said to buy a manual...oh well....how hard can it be....what can possibly go

    wrong.....

Got the fork legs off and read something about keeping the settings of the rebound thingy.......:deal

Drained out the oil.....it started off blue and then go progressively blacker and lumpy.

Gave them a clean out with some orphan fork oil, refilled to 116 of the top and bunged them back together.

    whew.....I need a beer...:freaky

    Next the freekin brakes....

Freekin brakes.... stripped them cleaned up the pistons, lubed the seals with brake lube, reassembled and bled.
Fitted the tank and seat ready for the test ride.....
Started it up, no rattles, nice and quiet...
Well its been a while and the XR400 is a tall bike.....eek....
Tip toes to start the thaaang.
Ah bugger that......enough of that for the day.....

I had to paint the house last summer
fortunately I had a desperate for cash varsity student son home over the holiday period so I never had to touch a paint brush.

you can tell which half he painted first but everything has is disadvantages....

Did he bore out the GB or put a XR motor in? I was thinking about boring out my GB 400 but everyone I talked to just said "Buy a faster bike & leave it as it is"
Sounds like that Honda owner has seen your workshop full of mismatched tools before:D

just drop a xr600 in mate then she'll really fly.

i made my own spark plug spanner, found a fitting the right size like the chainsaw lawnmower type then brazed an old socket on the end to fit a 1/4 ratchet

After two days of grueling painting I was allowed back in the shed.... what is it with women and grey this year.....:huh

Mr Honda made doing the tappets easy....
take off big plug, then small one, turn engine anti clockwise till you get a T in the small hole.
Tappets should all have slight play ready to check.
    Ex: 5 thou
    In: 4 thou
Good old screwdriver and locknut tappets...yay...
Found the valve lifter decompressor thingie one tight.....:eek1
Drained the oil out of the sump and frame ( yes its an Oil In Frame.....invented by Honda ...lol)
After that buttoned it all back and tried to start it....much better.
Bravely put on helmet and boots ( not keen on kicking these without boots and pain can ensue)
Tried to throw leg over..... squashed gentleman bits..... ouch..
Rode it up and down the street , thru the gears...all good....brakes now good...... knobbly tyres on road....not so good...
Looks like it ready for a trail ride........
Now its on to the Kawasaki KDX 200 ..... after some more painting I'm informed....:cry
Whew. time for a latte and some carrot cake.....its hard being a Jaffa.
