BMW R80G/S "Barn Find"

Hi all,

I have joined the forum to get advice from the people who know!

My Mum and Dad are downsizing to a smaller place and nead to clear out etc.

My Dad asked me to stick an old BMW bike on eBay for him - I googled it and discovered it may be a little special?

Details:

 Totally standard 1983 BMW R80 G/S in Dunkel Blue (black seat)
3,600 genuine miles (2 owners from new)
It was running when it went in the garage 10+ years ago but prob wont be a starter now
I have not got it out to photograph it yet (it is surrounded with decades of other stuff) but will be getting at it shortly

The bike is in the UK

Any thoughts what it is worth as is and is it worth paying to get it running/brakes sorted etc to get more for it??

It is the same bike as this one below (picture is from a thread on here!!)

I appreciate any guidence/advise you can offer!

Yes. Get it running. You'd probably get less than half what it's worth in non-running shape. In the US that bike could go for $6-7000 in good running condition. I'm not sure what the UK market is like, but anywhere in the world that's a sought after bike. Also, it's not entirely stock. The entire exhaust system appears to have been replaced with a stainless system, probably from Keihan in the UK. The stock system rusts fairly easily so this is a good upgrade. The stock system is painted black. The seat looks like it may have been modified a little bit also. Otherwise, that's a very nice bike you have there.

The bike in the picture is not the bike in the barn. The one in the picture is an example of what is in the barn. The bike i n the barn probably doesn't have the SS exhaust system, but who knows, maybe it does.

A bike with 3,600 miles(?) Clean it up good. It will probably shine. get it running, change fluids, etc.

For some reason you managed to find a picture of my bike, it has 88,000 miles on it and that is a Keihan exhaust. The seat is standard, just used.
Now sell me the one you have so I'll have backup...LOL

Hope you dont mind - it came up on a google image search!!

The exhaust on this one will be standard - the bike is currently 100% as standard.

sounds like you have struck gold - very sought after, your options are simple, sell as is and make a few bob, restore her and sell for a descent profit,restore her and keep and use her your self or just get her running and ride off to the horizons. If you cant make up yer mind - I will take her off you no problem. Jake.

You dont get many chances of saving and running yer dads old bike
get it running and ride it and be proud that it "was me dads old bike"
They are as said getting rare

Hope the OP doesn't mind, but here's one of the fifteen or so pics he uploaded:

While the bike certainly has its rough spots, I'd grab it. The other photos highlight some "less than ideal" storage conditions, but I see nothing there that would make me walk away from a reasonable price.
