I know the Sherpa has a bunch of fans here so I hope we can get an official thread started for the little beast. Here's mine, complete with bedliner pant job. Cheap, fun, and reliable. Is it just mine or do most Sherpas have banged up tanks? The other side is much worse. Let's see your mods. AZ
You used bedliner paint, how's it holding up? I was going to use Kylon Fusion paint on my KLX250's plastics - sounds like it would also work pretty good. Mark Carefree, AZ - 2500' http://www.climbingschool.com/Kawasaki_250s.html
The Super Sherpa has a remarkably wide-ratio six-speed transmission. It has considerably more spread than the new KLX250. Yamaha's XT225 is the only current motorcycle I'm aware of that has a wider spread from first to high gear.
I have over 5000 miles on my 2000 Sherpa & I love it more with each ride. RE gear ratio spread: the split between 2nd and 3rd seems too much for me but I love being able to ride 70mph. Can't have it all i guess.
But budget won't let me get one a while... I keep seeing them pop up for sale now and again on craigslist mostly. Just got back from a car trip to Hart Mt. Man, I am Jonesing for one bad...heck, even my wife is like, "Damn, having something to get to really remote places...would be fun". I just don't want to buy some offroad bike that has to be hauled to where it can be ridden. I missed getting one off of craigslist by this || much a while back. Still regret it. Hopefully the spheres will align and I will have the means and opportunity coincide.
Yup, got 2 low mile examples. One for my lady, Pat, and one for me. Her's is lowered 2 inches. They are truly amazing little bikes. Sooooo capable in almost any situation. Fun, light wieght, great gearing, etc. And about 80 mpg!! For other info and tech stuff, take a look at 1999-2003_supersherpa@yahoogroups.com (that's an underscore right after 2003)
I know it would vary with riding conditions, but how many miles on a tank can be expected if you are doing highway miles? What about taking some gravel/dirt pretty easy? I can get about 250 miles in my Ninja 250, if I am not flogging it...not too bad for a 4.8 gallon tank.
I'm probably getting around 80 mpg in most conditons. And what I hear is most are getting 70+ regardless.
I've not rode my to empty yet but it goes on reserve at about 95 miles. I'm going to run it dry next tank to see just how far it will go. I've got a small plastic 1 gallon tank to keep me from wakling at that point. My MPG is about 72 so far on my 2000 model. It likes 65 much better than 75 on the freeway. The vibes are better too at 65. Great little steed so far! AZ
So far, so good on the paint. I used that kind you can buy at Pep Boys for about $8.00 for a spray can. Gas doesn't affect it at all. No chipping yet and if it does, just spray over it. AZ
This link should probably be included here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=275752 Sherpas are cool! Cheers Clint
Bump. Really enjoying my new to me Super Sherpa. I put a high front fender on and changed out the Trailwings for some Maxxis C6006's. Fork seals are leaking so I need to do that when (if) I return to the states. Got it to haul on the back of the RV I'm now living in fulltime. Been in Baja for the last couple of weeks and having a blast exploring. Lot's of fish tacos, Negra Modelo's and Tequila.
G'day Justin. I had a rack fabricated for the RV. It uses two 2" receivers instead of just a center one. More stable and can handle the weight and rough roads better. It's made of 1" square tubing and expanded metal for the floor. I have a 5 gallon fuel can and the fold up ramp on there as well. Jay
OOPS! It came on the bike. I think it's a Kawasaki accessory, like the tank bag. You mean like on these bikes. Here is one from Australia that I like and might try and get. It comes on their agriculture version, I think. You don't mean the wire basket, do you?
Ahhh, I get it now, it looked like the basket was mounted on a rack... similar to the ones you attached. I just got one mounted on my XR and am thinking about the Sherp now too. Thanks for your replies.
jkam Hi, were in Baja are you? I would like to see a Super Sherpa up close, and I don't know anybody that has one... Thanks Damasovi
