Picking her up when she's down

This is a laugh. Dropped the 990 on a grassy side hill heavy side down. Leaked a lot of fuel btw.:huh . Tried a dead lift. Man am I old.. In-between frequent breaks I tried to think my way out of the jam. I was trespassing at the time on an abandoned railroad right-of-way:eek1. Found two half-rotted old rail ties and using them as levers got the bike up. I was whacked. Guess what I'm buying? One of those cool Warn winches.

I picked mine up with a dislocated shoulder once. Guess i'm not old yet.

A dead lift of a bike? Dude, you're not old... but you're gonna end up with a backache.

But, next time, go ahead and spin the bike around so the tires are down hill, then it's easier to pick up. Just grab a wheel and pull it around. I've sen many people try to pick it up with the tires up hill, it just don't work!

I have a tough time picking up my 990, particularly in the sand where I cant get good traction with my feet.

I was down in baja in a wash with the bike on the side. i could not get it up for the life of me. I ended up digging a trench that I slid the tires into. That tilted the bike upright some. I then would pick the bike up incrementally and jam my back pack under the bike gradually tilting it more and more. Finally it stood up in the hole I had dug. I then lifted the back tire somewhat up through the sand so that it was not so deep in the trench. Then got on, fired it up and rode off.

I hav got to say it was a ball buster in total.

I did take a picture first then hoisted it back upright and was surprised how easy it was to lift grabbing the lower handlebar and bending with my knees.

When I lift, I start with a push down, this way I can get a small momentum when lifting up. Im surpriced how easy it becomes:)

Having to carry around a winch when you can just use proper technique is silly. These bikes have dozens of hand holds. Back up to it, squat down, rotate the handlebars to full lock on the downed side (bike on left side, turn bars to full left lock) then grab the luggage rack, look up at the sky, and leg press it up.

If the ground isn't advantageous, grab the front or rear tire and rotate it to a better position.

Deadlifting 500# on uneven ground is a recipe for a back injury. Your legs should be more than strong enough to lift it.

What are you going to do if there's nothing to attach the winch to?

That way when there's nothing to winch from he can just leg press my bike up for me!

Or just sell it 'cause it's obviously too much bike for you

I can fall down 20 times in a ride and not get tired picking her back up.

Use your back in a quick, jerky motion, take your legs completely out of the equation....

You forgot the twisting. You've got to twist or it'll never come off the ground.

Im usually in panic/embasrrassed mode so I just yank mine up. Damn near get a hernia each time though. and Its always in a muddy rutted out section for some reason. But im also 27, 6'3, and my workout routine in the gym incorperates workouts that simulate lifting a 500lb orange pig.:huh

Picking it up is hard, but getting it up and embankment is a crapshoot! How long does one of those warn winches run on a 990 battery? I had to haul my husaberg 20 feet up a steep embankment a couple of weeks ago in lose rock... That was a great workout... Damn those trees which hang in the trail with an argumentative attitude...

By all means learn the proper way to pick your moto up. But if you simply cannot pick it up with the proper technique, you need to change to a moto that you can pick up. There are places in the country where waiting for someone to help you is no problem and then there are places that waiting is not safe! :eek1
