Copper Canyon for Christmas

I was just reading the “should BMW put a reverse gear on the GS?” thread and thought that I better get this going.:lol2

Supercreep and I had been talking for a while about getting a ride going this fall and things kept coming up that foiled our plans. We finally set out for Copper Canyon on December 23rd. This made up big heroes back home!

We trucked the bikes to Deming and left from there. Crossed the border and got moving Mexico style around noon.

Here is SC and his 650 on some of the nice twisties we finally found later in the afternoon.

A really sweet mountain pass, (that we will dread later). Also my first rock pic!:lol3

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119710978-M.jpg

Just a sprinkling of snow, really nice!

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119710921-M.jpg

We spent the night in Gomez Farias at a place where if you turn the heater on high, it will approach room temperature at about check out time the next morning. We waited as long as we could, then headed out in a cold fog.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711012-M.jpg

Not too bad, except for the fogging glasses and shields.

Another great stretch of road.:nod

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711065-M.jpg

Broke out of the fog and started seeing some of what we were riding through.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711096-M.jpg

We went through lots of unique small towns on the was to Creel. I think that this was Tamosachi.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711271-M.jpg

Made a quick fuel stop in Creel. I am un-impressed with Creel. Can't put a finger on it, just not what I was expecting.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711289-M.jpg

It is around 2 PM and Batopilas is only around 90 miles away. We should be OK.:scratch

I always ask for pics. This great looking Tarahumara lady gave me an OK nod.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711333-M.jpg

We had been somewhat concerned with snow at Creel's higher elevation going into this trip.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711470-M.jpg

If this is as bad as it's going to get, I'm IN!!!

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711449-M.jpg

This could be the first real view you get of the canyon system ahead.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711496-M.jpg

A guy could spend a lifetime taking pics of all the roadside shrines.

http://erikv.smugmug.com/photos/119731188-M.jpg

This is one of the best stretches of twisties that I have ever had the joy of riding. Christmas eve........no traffic.........not a cop in the whole state that cares about two speeding gringos.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711537-M.jpg

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711568-M.jpg

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711625-M.jpg

The thumpers were a blast on the pavement. Fairly evenly matched for power but not stoopid powerful.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711840-M.jpg

Ahhhhhhhhhh.............what we came for. Finally some dirt!:thumb

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711864-M.jpg

We had already started to shed clothes as we began decending into some warmer temps.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711907-M.jpg

Hard to believe that we were in snow about an hour before this.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119711940-M.jpg

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119712032-M.jpg

http://erikv.smugmug.com/photos/119738498-M.jpg

I had seen lots of ride reports from this area, but I really was unprepared for the magnitude and beauty of it!

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119712210-M.jpg

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119757204-M.jpg

http://erikv.smugmug.com/photos/119743536-M.jpg

More shrines in the canyon. If these are where someone died, there are lots of really bad drivers down there. There is literally a cross or a shrine on practically every corner.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119712163-M.jpg

It is getting a little late, but we didn't care. As supercreep says, "that's how we roll".:lol3

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119757510-M.jpg

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119757646-M.jpg

SC thought that I was killing time taking pics of rocks, but I wasted some good riding time taking pics of trees too!

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119757746-M.jpg
Lotsa different and wierd vegetation down there.

We rolled int Bato around dark, visited with the guy at Hacienda del Rio Margaritas, then went into town to see what else was available and went back to Margaritas. Our host said to "park the bikes up here". :deal

SC gasses his 650 up the steps in the dark!:huh

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119758131-M.jpg

SC at the ready with the cam catches me killing it towards the top.:lol2

http://erikv.smugmug.com/photos/119746388-M.jpg

They looked worse the more I looked at them in daylight.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119759047-M.jpg

The tall first step was almost the deal breaker for me. I wanted to put a "kicker" in front of it in the dark, but would not have ever heard the end of it.

http://gordy.smugmug.com/photos/119759242-M.jpg

This is for you supercreep.:flip

The place was incredible and we were the only guests!

http://erikv.smugmug.com/photos/119749697-M.jpg

We'll explore the area around Batopilas and go to Cerocahui next..................

Wow, Gordy! Is this place really that beautiful, or are you just a wonderful photographer? :lol3

Hard to take a bad photo there. Some are supercreeps as well.

Dave Tynan 01-04-2007 06:51 PM

Show us the route. :clap :clap

Hayduke 01-04-2007 06:54 PM

Nice Gordy. I've been down there a couple of times and always wondered how much snow might be there in the winter. Any sketchy spots? Did you get down to the older part of Creel (near the Zocolo)?

The twisties south of Creel are world class, IMHO.

supercreep 01-04-2007 06:58 PM

i knew that if i waited long enough you would eventually write this report. :D

Where is the Zocolo? How can you tell where the "old part" is?:lol3

none of it is REAL old. The main road coming into town goes up a hill and through town, but if you hang a left before the hill, then another left, a little water crossing, then under a bridge, you come out at the zocolo. You probably found it, but just wondering...

We were on the lower part going out, but don't remember a water crossing. For some reason, I was avoiding them at this point!:lol3

I wanted to get over towards the cemetary, but didn't. That area looked like it could be cool.

Hayduke 01-04-2007 07:22 PM

I wasn't impressed at first, but the town kinda grows on ya.

OK, more pics!!!

supercreep 01-04-2007 07:23 PM

this report could aslo be called:

"gordy takes a picture of every rock in mexico"

or

"mexico can be damn cold in december"

or

"mexicans are not the best with directions"

or

"why is supercreep such a dick?"

:lol3

supercreep 01-04-2007 07:27 PM

did someone say water crossing?

http://erikv.smugmug.com/photos/119780786-M.jpg

Gordy 01-04-2007 07:39 PM

Margaritas is awesome. $90 a night for two including 5 star dinner and breakfast.:tb

I lit the oil lamp in the bathroom for a little mood, but couldn't get SC drunk enough for a back wash.:cry

The architecture of this place is amazing. They said it was built around 1830 for the patron of the mine.
