6 months in Europe on a Duc

So, a little background & a pic to get this going.
Back in 2000 I ended up with a big stock pay-out & bonus check from the game company I worked for so I quit my job, shipped my Duc to my father's house in London, & started this ride.

Here's Rose, my 1995 Ducati 900 SS/SP. Named after an Australian girl I met near Sydney when I was 16. Not the normal Adventure ride. (That's me on the far right.)

In 1995 I got out of the US Air Force & left my wife (in the same week). I set a goal that in 2000 I'd own a Ducati & ride it around Europe. I had no idea how it'd work out but it did. Thank you to every child, teen, or parent who purchased Dungeons & Dragons game books, Magic: The Gathering or Pokemon cards.

Here's Rose without the baggage at a cafe in Italy.

The route which I planned & basically stuck to went from England to France, Spain, France again, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic, Germany, Holland, Belgum, & back to London.
I had all my photos up on a friends site years ago but I wasn't able to maintain it & almost lost my photos. I've now got all 1000 or so of them up at:
http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Europe%202000/

I'll only put up the best ones here but if you like what you see go there. There are some there of a more adult nature so be warned. ;)
This thread is going to be an ongoing process for the next week or so so one last photo to get you interested.

Six Months in Europe on a Duc

...sounds like heaven.

6 months in Europe on a Duc

So, when I began this trip I thought I might be gone for a long time so it seemed appropriate to have a going away party (or 4). The first two were in San Francisco where I got hit on by Siamese Twins:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...FParty0155.jpg

This is kind of disturbing because you don't know which of the 4 hands is grabbing your bum when you walk by. Nor do you know which one to offer to take home.

At the second party I had one of the basic elements to a good party: Fire!
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...FParty0121.jpg

Big Fire!

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Party0119A.jpg

Then back in Seattle where I had the other good components of a good party, bands:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty141.jpg

Bands:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...gparty132A.jpg

More bands:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty110.jpg

And of course, bands with Fire!

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty136.jpg

Nothing like a flaming Trumpet

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty135.jpg

Of course you also need your good friends:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty124.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty117.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...gparty165a.jpg

Lesbians:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty145.jpg

Ex-girlfriends:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty162.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0gparty159.jpg

& of course the girl you're leaving behind:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...0GParty015.jpg

Some times you wonder why you're leaving. But if you weren't it wouldn't be so much fun going. Besides, there are always plenty of new friends & girls to leave behind further down the road.

So after putting my bike on a plane to London it was off to my fathers in Stoke Poges, west of London.

6 months in Europe on a Duc, Part III

So, as you can see this might be a bit different post than most on here. While I was travelling the whole time on a motorcycle I have very few pictures of them (except in Italy), mostly because (except for two weeks) I was riding totally on my own.

What you will see is a lot of gorgeous old buildings, landmarks, hostels, people I met, & things strange & obscure. You will quickly notice I like the weird & unusual & even based a lot of my trip on a great guide book called 'Weird Europe'.

With that said let us move on to London where I arrived in a bittingly cold April. It snowed for the first time in London in 34 years so I took the time to link up with some friends from the US, see London for the 6th time, party a bunch & check out the local birds.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ndon-Lava2.jpg

Finally the weather cleared & I blasted down to Dover, got a hostel, & then onto the ferry to Calais & off to Paris where I stayed at a great little hostel called 3 Duc(k)s. They let me pull Rose into this gated area to keep the lowlifes away from it.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...nce3ducks8.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ce3ducks15.jpg

where I met a bunch of other travellers who may have been stranger than me.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ce3ducks2a.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ce3ducks7a.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...P3ducks10a.jpg

Of course I did the sights of Paris:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...7France25a.jpg

Musée Picasso (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mus%C3%A9e_Picasso):
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ePicasso3a.jpg

Musée Rodin (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mus%C3%A9e_Rodin):
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...nThinker2a.jpg

My favorite church in Paris, Sacre Cour (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacre_Coeur)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...acreCour3A.jpg

The view from Montmartre (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montmartre)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...nceEiffelA.jpg

and the
Musée de l'érotisme (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mus%C3%A9e_de_l%27%C3%89rotisme)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...eEroticm1A.jpg

Let's not forget the Catacombs (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Catacombs)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...atacombs1A.jpg

Jim Morrison's grave in Père Lachaise Cemetery
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A8re_Lachaise_Cemetery)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...imMorrison.jpg

the Louvre (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Louvre)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...anceLouvre.jpg

and the Centre Georges Pompidou (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompidou_Center)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Pompideou1.jpg

Whew, Paris zips by.

Because I had my bike, which is great for giving rides to tall English girls up the Champs Elysees & around the Arc de Triomphe at midnight at 80 mph
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...P3ducks11a.jpg

I was able to head out to a cool part west of central Paris called La Défense.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...LaDefenseA.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Defence01A.jpg

where you can see that the French love their carousels

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Defense01A.jpg

and you can see why

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Defense02A.jpg

I don't remember them being so interesting when I was a kid.

Also here at La Défense you see that when French culture decides to thumb it's nose at the rest of the world, they've got one big enough to do it with:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Defnese05A.jpg

So that takes us through Paris. After 9 days there waiting for the cold, rainy weather to break I headed off to Orleans & down the Loire River valley.

But that will have to wait until my next installment.

6 months on a Duc, Pt IV

My first stop after a beautiful day of riding was Bloise
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ceBlois02A.jpg

where I watched the local sport

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ceBlois04A.jpg

then on down to Amboise (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amboise)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Amboise05A.jpg

where Leonardi da Vinci died & there is a museum with models of many of his designs, like this tank

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...edaVinci03.jpg

then on down the Loire River valley for a few days

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Chateau02A.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...FountaineA.jpg

lots of mustard grown in the area

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ceLoire04A.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ceLoire09A.jpg

but not the place you'd expect to find a pagoda, near Château de la Bourdaisière (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A...rdaisi%C3%A8re)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...irePagodaA.jpg

I continued my journey out to the west coast of France through beautiful country

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ceLoire08A.jpg

and stopped on a French Army base to see their Musée des Blindés (which means tank) (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mus%C3%...s_Blind%C3%A9s)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Blindes07A.jpg

because I'm a huge WW II history buff.

Here I found the worlds badest scooter
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...Blindes09A.jpg

That is a 90mm recoilless rifle under the seat.

The rest of my trip took my down through La Rochelle (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Rochelle), Bordeaux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bordeaux), & then on into Spain. Unfortunately my camera & laptop were stolen out of my room while I was in the shower in Bordeaux so I lost the pictures of that part. Fortunately I had sent my images to a friend so didn't lose all of them to this point.

Next week I'll pick up with the Brothels of Madrid, the Steel of Toledo, the Enchanted City of Conan the Barbarian, and the Gaudi-ness of Barcelona.
