Help with dual star side stand

A long time ago before the bolt on sidestand was available I bought a dual-star sidestand for my KTM LC4a. It requires that you weld on a tab for the sidestand so that you can use it along with the center stand.

I have a TIG welder and minimal skills. I have approached the bike multiple times with welder in hand and the intent of welding on said tab to mount the side stand. I like the robustness of a welded on sidestand, especially with some of the reports of the bolt on unit vibrating off. Nevertheless I have chickened out each time as I am afraid of mislocating the tab and having to grind it off and weld the tab on multiple times till I get it right. Doesn't sound like a nice thing to do to a motorcycle frame.

Has anybody done this already? Any pictures or directions of exactly how this thing goes on?

heya boyscout. :wave

I haven't seen that info posted, but plenty of folks have that sidestand and probably a few have had to weld it on or have it welded. Here's a bump for ya.

Thanks meat. Does anybody have, or is anybody willing to take, pictures of their welded on sidestand tab?

:D bump

Sidestand tab

I did that mod on my Adv about a month ago and will post some pics this evening. The welding was done by a mate with a tig welder.

After mounting the sidestand I found the sidestand mounting bolt interfered with the kickstarter. I had to grind away a bit on the latter and move it out somwhat on the spline shaft which solved the problem. All good though. Will post pics of it all ltr though.

Thanks I appreciate it. Any suggestions on what you would do differently to avoid that problem?

Scout,

I looked at my buddies's (CountPacman) sidestand setup before I had the sidestand tab welded onto my bike and tried to get my setup as close to his. His bike (2000 model) apparently came from the factory with the tab already welded on. There really is very little wiggle room with the tab placement as you don't want it to interfere with the swingarm.

He had the same kickstarter/sidestand mounting bolt interference issue with the sidestand fitted. This must be the reason KTM decided not to sell the bike with the sidestand pre-mounted.

Hopefully the pics I'll post later will explain it all.

The bloke that welded this for me first tacked on the tab and then allowed me to attach the sidestand and check the orientation. Once I was happy he did a proper weld. It took about three tacked-on attempts before I was happy and we did the final weld. Also of note, I disconnected the motorcycle battery before welding on the frame.

Seems I add one image at a time.

The bike is on the centerstand, with the sidestand halfway extended.

You can see the angle at which the tab was welded on in the image taken from the rear. The red stuff is grease.

This is what I had to file away from the kickstarter because of the interference with the sidestand bolt.

Thanks man. That helps. Appreciate it.

If you end up taking that sidestand off the tab for any reason, I'd love to see pics of the tab without the sidestand or frame guard :D

Yeah what BoyScout said about a pic with out the stand and frame guard in the way. Just asking.
