Wee-strom vs new F650GS for an ex-SVS'er

Just sold my SV650S, I liked it but the ergos absolutely killed me. Tried out a KLR for 30 mins, adored the upright position and the wind protection compared to the SV. I was very comfortable except for the bars being a little high (I have long arms, so they would have been more comfy a little lower).

Now I'm deciding between a wee-strom or a new F650GS (the twin), any thoughts? Mostly on-road (80% at least) with occasional off-road excursions, comfort is king for me...

seriously tho, wait for the 650GS twin, it's worth it, mine is just around the corner and I went thru a similar decision process as yours

I've had almost every flavor of GS that BMW has ever made, and even a G650X. I just picked up a VStrom and I gotta say, for use as 90% road bike, I'm impressed.

I'd give an inexpensive, used V a try before dishing out big bucks for a Beemer.

Of course I can't hear BMW now without hearing "You did what? A fucking GS?... I'm really fucked now"

Now if you really want to ride it off road, leave them both behind and get a KTM:D

I think I'll take y'alls advice, try out a used wee, use it for the next few months and when the bmw 650/800 twins are here, give those a go and possibly switch.

You are contemplating buying a grossly overpriced first year BMW against a proven, reliable, inexpensive Wee?
Good luck, at least your bank manager will put you on his Christmas card list.

This seems like a very logical approach. Most SV owners love that engine, so they love the Strom....

I went from an SVs to a DL, for the same reasons. There are plenty of used ones available now. $4-5k will get you a nice one. You could buy one now, try it for a few months or a year, and move on to the BMW if you're still interested when there's more info to base that decision on (as in, reviews, recalls, shorter lines at the dealers, test rides.......)

I have an SV650S (with standard bar conversion) as well as a DL1000.

Get the Wee!

Go with the F650GS, lighter and more HP. Both have the same MSRP in Canada. When I bought my Wee, if the Beemer was out than I'm sure I would have bought the beemer.

I went from an SV650 standard to a DL650 for similar reasons, but honestly I was disappointed in the motor. Having Suzuki detune the motor for more mid-range, but by raising the weight of the bike by about 60 lbs and dropping the output by almost 10 HP lost something in the translation for me.

For me the vee is closer in personality to the original SV platform.

For the price of one BMW
You can have two used DL650 with money left over to nuckfugget it up.

AND you won't get to a first name basis with the service writer of your local BEEMERBIMMERMINI palace.

Functionally the DL650 is a fantastic transparent image-less motorcycle.

However motorcycling is not just about the bike
For lots and lots of folks it's also about the image.
For some it's only about the image...

If you need the image then get the Beemer. You might get function,
once and a while... when it's out of the shop.
If you need the function get the Suzuki however you will never, ever get any image.
Save for the image of a computer nerd with his glasses held together with tape
and a pocket protector for his mechanical pencils.

Me I got both a DL and an airhead BMW.
I get image and I get function.

Thanks for the tips, very helpful - is it generally agreed that bmw motorcycles are not as reliable as the japanese manufacturers, or is it just the high cost of service?

I don't want to buy any bike that I haven't been able to test ride for at least 30 mins, I don't think any BMW dealership is going to be giving me a test ride on the brand new F650/800GS twins anytime soon, so a used Wee seems to be the way to go. I know the F800GS isn't out till fall, but is the F650GS twin even available in the US yet?

I appreciate the BMW's styling and the brand image, but it's not high on my priority list for this purchase.
