My Simpson Trip 2008
Well after years of dreaming and months of planning, we pulled it off, with only minimal drama's. Friday 27 Jun 2008 myself and my little mate Greg on his KTM640Adv met at a local servo, grabbed some fuel and said my good bye's to my two sweet girls.
The plan on the first night was to punch out a few hours on the tar to get to Taroom on Friday night and hit the dirt on Saturday morning. A slight detour was taken on the way to Taroom - Greg and I pulled into Dalby Moto for a leg stretch and a sit on the KTM690E.. Justin from Dalby Moto was kind enough to let us start the bike and run it up the road and back... I think I am in love!!! nice little bike, hope they sort out a big tank or an Adv model soon...
Anyway back on track - we rolled into Taroom after a few hours dodging skippy's in the dark. We ducked down the pub for a few beers then slipped up to the servo and pitched out tents. It was very cold that night, but we jumped up early grabbed some fuel and hit the dirt...
Was a cold run in the morning to Injune, then a fast ride with some amazing country to Blackall where we were to meet up with the ride organiser Lee (AKA Stinky's Adventures) - my wife's cousin. Lee's KTM640Adv was sitting in town so we could see it. I rolled along side the silver bullet an noticed some damage right away. We all shook hands and I said, bit early in the ride for a crash Stinky - to which he replied - I didn't fall off - but I did hit an emu.. which died.. ha ha ha lucky for Lee not so luch for the big chook.

Thank god my dear old (ok ok not that old) dad (AKA Morgo) had given me some huge tire patches (for tyres not tubes) and I patched up the tire replaced the tube and off we went again. By Bediourie the split in the tyre had opened up a bit so we chased up a tyre, found a brand new Chengching 6ly tyre, it looked more like a rear tyre for my XR400....
From Bediourie we cut across to the Plenty Hwy via some private property -which we sourced permission - it was a great short cut.

After Ross River, we headed into Alice Springs and dropped the bikes off for Tyres and some service work. I was horrified to be charged two hours labour to have two tyres fitted and the Airfilter pre cleaner - cleaned... I stuck it to them but they said that is how long it took..... I should of fitted the tyres and cleaned the filter myself - using a bum bag of tools I could of done it in less than an hour..Race Motorcycles for those interested!!!
We Stocked up on some food, watched the fantastic result for the last round of the State of Origin Queenslander!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Note to further readers: It always helps to read Aussie ride reports with a heavy 'stralian accent. Other wise, you can't understand a damn word.

now where was I
I enjoyed the big bike in the sand, steer it with the throttle I kept telling myself. I was expecting it to be a bit harder based on a few recent reports of others on 950/990's, but I had a blast in the sand - I do like sand however.
After Rainbow Valley we headed south down the Stuart Hwy and cut East across the Huge River Road to jump on the old Ghan Road, now Greg and I raced the Finke Desert Race back in 2001 so it was a bit of a trip down memory lane and a chance to see the sites we never noticed during the race........ Then headed for Mt Dare for the night for fuel, water and the last supper.... so to speak.
Greg noticed his front tire was on the rim back wards - directional tyres the Dunny 606. He was pissed off as having to change a perfectly good tyre and after the bike shop charged us full mechanics rates to fit them..... did I tell you I was charged 2hrs labour to fit to tyres and clean my Air filter pod (pre filter only)... Next morning we packed up with excitment of hitting the Desert - I had a crook back so downed some pain killers and zipped to Dailhousie Springs for a soak, I am sure this helped... not sure if the old dear who watched me strip down to my banana hammocks will get over the view!!!!!
We headed into the Desert propper after the dip and stopped at Purnie Bore for lunch and to let the air down a bit in the tyres. We poured some fuel from our jerry cans into the main tanks and gave our empty fuel drums to a couple of lucky 4x4errs... Started off a bit tentitive with 62 Ltrs of fuel and 16ltrs of water, food and camping gear.. as it turns out I was impressed how the big orange harry also nicked named the super tanker... was handling good considering. And the upside is it was only going to get lighter...

The first day in the French line was good - full of excitement. We road until about 4pm then decided to head off the track a bit and find a camp.
Tents set up, bikes checked over camp fire was sorted then we climbed up the top of the dune near our camp for happy hour and to watch the sun go down.. [IMG]http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k...impson3112.jpg[/IMG]

and then came big red
We were greeted by big red - what an amazing site - although not as big as I had pictured. There was a big mud/water hole on the Western side, and a detour around it, so we took that option.
Once we got to big red, a few 4x4s were having a few goes... One bloke said "gezz how will that big bike go with all the gear on it" so I showed him.... [IMG]http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k...o/simpson1.jpg[/IMG]

I could of blasted up there a few more times, but three was enough, and I hadn't had a beer and real food for a few days... so off to Birdsville pub for a few Golds and a Birdsville pie.

Great ride report!. The vast expanses of nothingness in the land of blokes and ocher’s (is that how it's spelt?) are mind-boggling!
