Three guys three KTM's and 7 days of WA,Oregon,Idaho & Montana

Three of us Tom, Mike and myself Marty took a week to explore WA, Oregon, Idaho and Montana Aug 9-16. Tom rode the Black 950 and Mike and myself on the faster Orange 950's.

Tom and I trailed our bikes to Spokane WA to met with Mike at his dad's place Friday evening. Mike came up from Vancouver WA in his truck. We camped out in his dad's back yard Friday night and Saturday we were ready to explore mainly Idaho for 7 days.

Not going to go into a lot of detail on the ride just want to share my pics of the ride . Look for Mikes"s (mrudy) ride report on this fourm.

Day 1 - Saturday morning were up early and ready to go. Plan was to head south via WA back roads to Hells Canyon.

From Left Mike, Tom & Marty

Both Red bikes started up but the black on had other ideas. I just made some jumper cables for this trip and had to pull them out. With a quick jump we were ready to ride. Here is Tom putting his bike back together

That being said and soon to be edited I am assuming, continue with the nice ride report. Good Pics so far too.:lol3 :lol3

It was a great trip, filled with breathtaking scenery, wild animals, 47 nice people and only 1 b*tch of a USFS Ranger. Combined with the dangers of the wilderness, the adventures of forging our own trail when the road is no more, bears, broken-scratched and bent bikes.

Stay tuned for more....

Meanwhile, more pics from day 1:

Tom and Marty's KTMs must be gay because they are already touching. I won't reveal which one plays the sheep.

McCroskey State Park was pretty nice. Would like to checkout the OHV trails sometime.

The Old Spiral Highway leading into Lewiston, ID is a must-do. Up or Down, they are both fun.

[hijack]I'm not a KTM historian but I saw a red 950 a couple of years ago up in Washington. The owner said it was a prototype, and that it was that color from the factory. Beautiful bike too...[/hijack]

Great thread! Can't wait for the rest :evil

Now on with the thread.

I would like to see detail on how the fuel and water cans are mounted on the back. That looks like a nice setup.

Be careful. The locals up here are nuts....Tom looks like a California hitchhiker....

This camp ground did not have any good tent spots to park next to. No one was around so we rode in on the walking path to the end of the tent camping area and had the place to ourselves. Notice the walk way.

Kolpin Fuel/Water Jugs

The set up looks okay, but wait til Day 2's report and you'll see what happens. Made some critical errors in the mounting of said jugs.

In the meantime, here's the install photos

Blackdog CW tail rack

http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/345461627_s6sj6-M.jpg

Filled both cells with water for the initial tryout. Had heard that Kolpins leak like a sum bitch.

http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/345461746_utWTv-M.jpg

Anyone have a calculator handy? Any physics freaks in the house? How much force is being exerted on the tail rack with the mounting system I have, the Kolpin brackets weight about 5 lbs each, plus 1.4 gals of water/petrol in each cell at a height of, let's say, 12 inches?

http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/345463006_TgBvD-M.jpg

mrudy 08-26-2008 09:25 PM

Day 2 supplemental

Well, looks like Marty posted day 2. So here's my take.

Night 1 was spent at Hells Gate State Park between Lewiston and Asotin, by the way.

I'm running with the Kolpin fuel/water cells as I mentioned earlier, but Marty and Tom are using Touratech 2liter jugs mounted to their Gobi's. I don't know if we've got any pictures of their set up, but it was rather distressing watching them try to fill these buggers with petrol using a high flow station nozzle and a funnel. Petrol was everywhere. Not to mention the TT jugs bulge a bit and when they went to put them into the brackets, they oozed fuel. Sum bitch.

Crossing into Oregon--say, Marty, you forgot to mention Oregon in the title.
http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/353566002_dfZuC-M.jpg

After leaving the canyon and getting up onto the ridge, it was beautiful, high altitude prairie land with trees. Right out of a scene in the history books.

http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/353566248_WDKqD-M.jpg

After lunch at Buckhorn Overlook (which was mindblowing), we got on a really cool road (the one with the barbed wire gates we had to open/close). And I got railing really good, lofting the front wheel over small rises in the road, and doing some jumps on the dry mud puddles. Wahoo fun!

Uh oh! something doesn't look right.
http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/353566519_Jzy7Y-M.jpg

Too much stress.
http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/353566596_3NszS-M.jpg

Bent her pretty good. I want to stress that I don't fault the BlackDog CW tail rack one bit. The tailrack is a good piece of hardware and for its intended usage, can do some amazing things. BUT, loading up 26+ pounds of deadweight at a height of about 12 inches on the very tippy end of this thing, about 6 inches from the nearest mounting bolts, is just too much to ask. In my set up, I should have added some strengthening bar stock or angle iron to stiffen the rack. But, I'm just lazy that way.

No worries, we just straightened it out the best we could, add some straps, and Tom gives it a go on the 950 riding backwards, so all is good.

http://mrudy.smugmug.com/photos/353566682_pBtiJ-M.jpg

Mighty town of Imnaha. Great folks inside. Be sure to stop in and say howdy, although we hear the owners want to sell the place and retire. Hope the new owners will be as welcoming to ADV riders as they were.

We were about 20+ miles from Warren still and came to a section of the road that was washed out but passable. I was trying to save My clutch which was almost gone and was trying not to stopped and clipped the tree where Mike is sitting and knock my case off.
http://jorgenson.smugmug.com/photos/...2_Tezi4-XL.jpg
The next section I was not as lucky and did not see a log to the left and this was the effect. It not much fun trying to navigate through tight areas without a clutch. This time I broke the lock off my Gobi and had to use Tom tie downs he brought for just this situation. Leave it to Tom to have most everything.

This pic shows the log to the left which I hit.

We ended at Shiefer Campground. No one else was there.
http://jorgenson.smugmug.com/photos/...2_rg9JQ-X2.jpg
We needed to change our planes since my clutch was giving me grief and instead of heading to elk City we decided to head to Orofino to a KTM shop to get my bike fixed. The Piston Clutch was leaking pretty bad and we called earlier and found they had a PISTON CLUTCH kit for my bike and would hold it until we got there.
Ended the day with 201 miles 18mph aver in 11hrs 05 min.
Attached is day 3 route.

Day 4 Tues

Day 4 Tues
Packed up and headed towards Riggins. I would bleed my clutch every evening and at lunch and in the mean time would not stop or if I dd would be on a downward hill side so I could coast and pop the bike into gear. Pretty much I would stay in 3 gear all the time and grunt around corners and slowly come to a stop and put it into neutral. I only used the clutch once in a while when needed but after about 5-10 pulls it would become useless. Enjoy.

Here is the route we took.

There was a fire I belive last year that roared through the area.

Slate Road had some nice scenary along the way.

http://jorgenson.smugmug.com/photos/...0_YpEdF-XL.jpg
Found this nice campground at Fish Creek. This was one of our early stops around 4:00 most other time it was 6-7PM It was nice to just sit around and relax.http://jorgenson.smugmug.com/photos/...7_hrcsk-XL.jpg
Tom and Mike were telling me that a squirrel in my bike and I thought they were pulling my leg.

Here is what happened when I started the bike. Squirrel?

Nope a chipmunk.

We took apart everything on the clutch handle to see were it was leaking and could not tell where. Put things back together and the clutch was feeling pretty good even after 10-20 squeezes. Still decided to head to the KTM in the morning to get the new clutch piston

Ended the day with 143 miles 17mph ave in 8hrs 23 min.
