High and Dry, Colorado and Utah

It's that time again. The three of use, every couple of years head off for a longer ride. The cast is 650freak, Bejebus and myself.

This year was a little different, weird even. 'freak and I usually take allot of time planning and researching the area to give ourselves the best use of time, seeing the things that really spark our curiosity. We were both really busy and this year the trip was a little more spontaneous than normal, which is kinda weird. I found myself saying thing like "the geological formation here is significantly different" which is pretty strange.

Then there was this...

which was weird because it was taken more or less at sunrise. On previous trips we often weren't on the road 'till 10 or so.

OK this post is a bit of a place holder because I really wanted post 1000 to be in RR's, trust me there is more to this trip...

That first picture is great!
Is that in western Colorado near Bedrock? Sure looks like Paradox Valley.

Alright, back on the road...

We left home on a Friday night knowing we had about 1800km to cover before we made it to our first destination, the area west of Denver. Our first stop was just across the boarder in Shelby Montana.

Weirdness ensued

maybe not weirdness, but there was definitely some, ummmm... altered psychology. This was the funniest night of the trip.

Once free of the pull of Shelby we bee lined south through Montana

rolling on through Idaho. Here's the Tetons from the west side looking east.

we crossed the mountains just south Grand Tetons NP leading to our first pass of the trip, with many more to come.

Night found us east of Jackson without many services. Bejebus found these cabins and saved us an hour of riding in deer country at night. Up early the next morning and pushing hard for the Denver area.

We couldn't resist a little trip through Flaming Gorge

We continued on down the crazy switch backs then headed east to Colorado.

Dinasour for Lunch. Not much in town, but this place has GREAT espreso! Bejebus had about 7 shots in 2 americanos. Our theory was that if he could vibrate completely 180 degrees out of phase with his 1200 then he should feel less vibration. Sounds fesible?

All day 650freaks bike had been hesitating. It was worse at lower elevations and higher temperatures. We eliminated a blocked vent, my best guess was the fuel was boiling in the float bowl. The float bowl sits pretty close to the exhaust header on the KLR, so we improvised a heat sheild with a soda can. The problem never recurred, but it never got as hot as that day for the rest of the trip. We touched 40 degrees celcius.

We spent the night at Frisco. We hoped to get a little further east, the mechanical issues from earlier and choosing the sceanic route through Flaming Gorge cost us some time. Frisco wound up being a nice place to spend the night. We prefer town that have good places to eat, but are real huge tourist traps.

Our objective in this area of Colorado was Mt Evans. It's not a difficult ride, being that it is paved up to the top, but I think it's the highest I have ever been outside of an airplane.
