Touring Slovenia on- and offroad

Hi there!

After beeing active in the TA- and AT-thread in the beasts area i thought it's time to try my first ride report. So here we go...

We, that ist Hardheader an me with a couple of friends. Go means going to our annual one week offroad alpine tour. This year for the first time to Slovenia, just because we heard that it should be nice there and most of our favorite routes in the Italian / French border area are getting closed and illegal. So it is May 2008 and this years team is:

Eike on Suzuki DR350 and Ralf on BMW R1100GS, both experienced riders, they did several Africa / South America trips, Anita on BMW F650GS with some offroad experience from last years trip to Spain, Klaus on AfricaTwin 750, no offroad experience at all, and haven't ridden a bike for the last 10 years, Hardheader on AfricaTwin 650 and me on Transalp 600, both with some offroad experience and many many miles on the road.

Some words of conclusion in advance: Slovenia for me is one of the most beautifull countries on the Alps. Great landscape, friendly people, fantastic roads, pittoresque camping spots... I just loved it.

Day 1: Munich to Kobarid

Near Arnoldstein, close to the border to Slovenia. We more or less went there with just one break for lunch:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo00.jpg

First view down to our camping spot close to the Soca river. Klaus new it from white water kajaking there:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo01.jpg

The area around the bar. Verny nice, with some small fire places. As a welcome drink we got some local slivowitz (Schnaps) :freaky:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo02.jpg

Having dinner... the small fires where lite up and the local cook prepared some nice grilled food:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo03.jpg

Later in the evening we moved the table closer to the fire, it's still cold and rainy:

Day 2: over and around Vrsic Pass

The next morning. Preparing breakfast. We found a perfect place for our outdoor kitchen:

Preparing routes and tracks, playing with the didital toys...

an unknowen chaser on a BMW:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo12.jpg

the team, left to right, front to back: Eike, Götz (Hardheader), Klaus, Ralf, Andi (me), Anita:

the girls posing around: Anita:

and Eike:

Anita again:

that happens when you take office-city-people out to the fresh air:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo17.jpg

getting better after some coffee:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo18.jpg

finally we found a gravel road:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo19.jpg

completely legal:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo20.jpg

on that way our history was couching: the remainings of a village which was destroyed in revenge by the german Wehrmacht during WW2:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo21.jpg

more gravel:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo22.jpg

trying to do some advanced enduro: the path has even been on the GPS and looked like a nice shortcut, but for some of the team it was too difficult or they claimed to have the wrong tools / tyres. OK, it was really muddy, on some places rather deep, you should have at least some knobbies:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo23.jpg

Surpirse, surprise... everybody is standing around and looking like an idiot. What happened?

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo24.jpg

Ralf was leading and decided in the last moment to turn right. Eike was behind him and did a full stop, sadly the DR's break light did not pass this information to me. Thanks to my 320mm supermoto racing break I did not crash into her, but the breaks of Anitas F650GS behind me did not make it. So she used her left fork leg to redesign my Givi panniers and afterwards did a detour through the green:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo25.jpg

Her track through the grass. She was lucky, a bit mor to the left and it could have gone terribly wrong:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo26.jpg

My panniers in the new design. I must admit that I was really annoyed. This crash was really not necessary:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo27.jpg

On the beemer just a few scratches:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo28.jpg

For the next offroad section we take the rubbers out of the F650s footpegs:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo29.jpg

Anita, Ralf and me tried a shortcut through the forest. The others thought the ground was too loose and the mud too deep so they went around it. After some 100m the track was blocked by some trees and we decided that it might also be illegal and turned around:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo30.jpg

Ralf fighting the big BMW:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo31.jpg

Short time later we catch up with the others. Where to go now?

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo32.jpg

Get all your braveness together, concentrate...

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo33.jpg

and goooooooo:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo34.jpg

Yippheee :clap:clap:clap we found a mudhole. Everybody is allowed:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo35.jpg

Eike:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo36.jpg

Hardheader:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo37.jpg

and Klaus. Remember, he paused for 10 years and did never any offroad before:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo38.jpg

And once again one of our shortcuts just vanished:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo39.jpg

Cow and calf:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo40.jpg

Slowly we are getting tired. Some use the time we need to find directions for food:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo41.jpg

Transalps are also usefull to create food buffets:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo42.jpg

Back in the camp we cooks some fine noodles:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo43.jpg

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo44.jpg

and finally have food and beer and... :kumbaya

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo45.jpg

to be continued, I'll have to got to work / nighshift now...

Bye.

Day 3: over and around Monte Stol

After breakfast in the morning Klaus had to leave us. Work was calling him back to Munich:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo46.jpg

Leaving the camp and crossing the Soca:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo47.jpg

Today's highlight: Stol. It's a legal unpaved / gravel road up one mountain. Sadly you are not allowed to ride up to the peak anymore. In the beginning it's a bit rough with big stones in narrow and tight twisties. Eike did not like that at all so she and Ralf returned to the camp:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo48.jpg

Anita climbing up:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo49.jpg

Hardheader, Anita and me at the highest point that can be reached legally. Sadly it was rather cloudy so we could not see anything:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo50.jpg

Gorillas in the mist...

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo51.jpg

on the descent again:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo52.jpg

me enjoying riding...

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo53.jpg

Back at the camp we met Ralf and Eike for lunch. Eike didn't want to go biking today, so Hardheader, Anita, Ralf and me left for an afternoon tour which sadly became illegal recently. So I won't tell you where we have been:fitz. For that tour beeing completely offroad Ralf changed his BMW for Eikes DR.

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo54.jpg

Ralf went ahead checking directions, I'm waiting for the rest. Thought it's a good opportunity for a picture when the all return to my place:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo55.jpg

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo56.jpg

At this point Anita had to leave us for a meeting. She will return tomorrow night.

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo57.jpg

In this place Hardheader had to give up. The worn Heidenau K60 were the wrong tool for wet leaves and roots:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo58.jpg

Transalp climbing up:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo59.jpg

This spot doesn't look too mean, just a littel creek, some wet rocks, a little step:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo60.jpg

But I remember I had to fight. Look at my compressed front forks:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo61.jpg

At this place also Ralf and me had to give up:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo62.jpg

taking a short foto-session:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo63.jpg

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo64.jpg

the sign to the place we wanted to go was pointing up here, and we didn't want Hardheader waiting for us for too long:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo65.jpg

on our way back to the camp:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo66.jpg

Somehow Ralf and me couldn't get enough today, so we went off again, a short round before dinner and dark. We found a nice pit in the forest, perfect for practicing climbing uphill:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo67.jpg

What I didn't think about when making this suggestion was that there was absolutely no space down there to gain speed. For Ralf with the light 350 it was easy, I needed 3 attepmts to get out again. If you look closely you can see me just falling over:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo68.jpg

made it!

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo69.jpg

Shortly after the pit we were on tarmac again. The the road became unpaved, the unpaved road became a single track... :clap ... and there was no sign saying it's forbidden to ride here :clap:clap:clap

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo70.jpg

We realy had fun:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo71.jpg

the track winded down into the Soca valley and I was getting a bit nervous how to get out again. In the end it became a bit technical, but without major problems

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo72.jpg

Back at the camp we got some energy drinks (Slovenian beer is rather tasty!)

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo73.jpg

Multifuel stoves a dangerous tools. Aprroach with care!

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo74.jpg

should I wait for the others or eat their food?

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo75.jpg

This is not water! This is the regular dosis when you order Slivovitz:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo76.jpg

more to come...

Bye, Andy

Day 4: along the border between Slovenia and Italia

Anita returned during the night. After breakfast Eike and Ralf left. They have two small children and a half finished house waiting...

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo77.jpg

For today Hardheader has chosen a wonderful, easy gravelroad along the Italian/Slovenian border:

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo78.jpg

I was kind of ill that day, some headache or cold or something. So not too many pics form that day.

http://www.agrimm.net/reisen/sloweni...lder/slo79.jpg

Here Anita hit the ground. The little creek hat some mud with it, was really slippery. No real harm done. Some villagers coming by told us that some weeks ago a bicyclist crashed at the same spot and did not regain his conciousness yet.
