SC- Sandhills to Swamp ride and info on Sandhills State Forest*Now with more RIVER!

So this morning I headed out from Blenheim to Sandhills State Forest to get some riding in and visit the Forestry office for a permit. Sandhills is in Patrick, SC. It's a nice area and they host the SandBlast Rally:wings They don't call it Sandhills for nothin' though and I had a pretty good mix of semi-hardpack dirt roads, deep/soft/squirley/wash out your front tire type of sand, and a few mud holes thrown in for good measure. Anyone can traverse the forest on the main dirt roads but there are also many dirt roads signed as "Authorized Vehicles Only". I previously called the office and was told you could get a permit to travel those roads but would need to come into the office during business hours to obtain it. Business hours are 8-12noon & 1-4:30 M-F.

So after lunch, I stopped by the office. Got flagged down by an Officer that was leaving the parkinglot. He wanted to let me know to not be assin' around, donuting, and using excessive speed. I assured him that I was just there to ride and didn't plan on getting on their sh*tlist. I went into the office and talked with the nice lady about the permit. They needed to copy my registration and insurance card. It was then that she noticed I was wanting a permit for a Motorcycle. "We don't allow dirt bikes on the forest roads." :huh I showed her it was a licensed vehicle with insurance, which is what the permit requires, and that it should be thought of the same as a 4X4 truck. :deal She gets the boss and he gets on the phone to someone else to make sure, "Ok, no problem." :clap Woohoo!

So I turn the GPS on and head out. Hit a few duck ponds and ran into some folks training some real pretty Black Labs in duck recovery.

So after a great time in the sand, I headed back toward Blenheim and thought, with all this dry sand, I should stop by some of the less dry areas close to the house. The first is a nice pond stuck back in the woods that links into the Great Pee Dee River. Second pic is of the river just a few miles away from the first pic. It's just now dropping below flood stage since all of the rain we and NC got last week.

So I put a hundred miles on the odometer and got some sun. It was a real pretty day with temps in the mid 80's and I had a great time. Would be nice to have some other folks to ride with. Wes

BTW: Here's a pic from SandBlast'09
I went down this road today and yeah, it is real slick! :eek1

Thirty-four looks and not a single comment? :huh Did I do something wrong? Wes

Can't make up my mind
I've just been trying to decide if I wanted to ride the trails or float the river in my boat.
Looks like fun either way! :D

We toured the area during the Sand Blast in the YoshJusty. Great area untill it gets hot.

Gonna have to head that way to explore myself.....

Looks like a lot of fun. I am hoping to get down there again for some camping and exploring before it gets too warm. Thanks for the info and pics.

As the crow flies McBee is around 75 miles from my place. WAY TO MUCH Pavement between here and there for the DOT knobbies on the LC4.
I have been eyeing several dirt road when I go to Cassatt...which I'm street biking to today.

I might have to trailer the LC4 down to Cassatt and check out the Sandhills State forest area.

Thanks for the replies. I hope to get back up there maybe the first of next week. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to make it over to the Great Pee Dee River WMA off hwy 34 in Darlington County for some other swamp and river pics to add to this.

MarkNC & Cirbo, give me a shout when you head down there :thumb
Halfcab, google couldn't find Dog Patch, SC? I'm guessing round Rock Hill or something?

Thanks, Wes

So finally after all of the rain and pissy weather we have been having for the past four days, I got out this morning. Headed over to
the Great Pee Dee River WMA and got some pics. It is a really nice area and the road in carries you down about 5mi of dirt, mud, and
golf ball sized lava rock gravel roads. Little harry in a few spots but not something a street bike couldn't get to when it is dry.
Wouldn't recommend it in the dead of summer. Real swampy and tons of biting yellow flies through most of the summer. Enjoy, Wes

What some of the road in looked like:

What most of the road in looked like:

River didn't fall much from the flood stage it was at last week and then we got a bit more rain in the past four days so it will probably hit flood stage again.

Because of a gated path, this is as close to the river as I could get the KTM.

On the way out, I stopped by an Archeological Excavation Site.
It was pretty cool. Well, until I talked to one of the Vols. I asked her what kind of stuff they had found. She tells me that, unfortunately,
they have not found anything in the past 30yrs at this site. :huh Uhh... yeah, Thirty years! There was at least 30 people there!

So after leaving the WMA, I headed over to a dirt road a few miles away that I wanted to know where it went.
Never knew this was here!
eta for spelling.

Looking for?
And what have they been hoping to find the last 30 yrs.

That area with the lily pads looks like rich fishing ground.:evil

I don't know, probably our hard earned tax dollars at work! "I don't care what you find, just get out there and dig in the dirt so the checks keep coming.":huh

Yeah, the lily pad pond looks like fun. A flyrod and a couple large popping bugs should score some large mouth bass and/or some huge bluegill.:freaky

Hey Wes I made that ride over to Sandblast on my bike and its a pretty good hike for me to get there... There were some guys over on Ral/Fay thread wanting to do a sandblast revisit camp out thing... I could probably come down and do a ride in that area but it would take some planning. Probably have to come down and camp if I can find someone to watch my dog. Anyhow I got some guys over here in Wilmington that might do a camping weekend.. Maybe we could get something going this spring..

PS I sent you an E-mail about the trail near Lumberton... I couldn't find the thread over at ARFCOM that you were talking about..
