2nd full mOOn nOOb's DV 3/12-15

Well... I just got in and I am way too tried to be prolific in a ride report. The ride report will just have to develop and grow as the rest of the inmates get home.

But first off:

A BIG HUGE thanks to H8chains for putting this all together! :clap :freaky :clap :freaky :1drink

All I have for right now (I really need a shower) is:

Ready to go:

800 miles (round trip)... with about 350 miles of dirt.:evil... one blowout... two flats later:

Ok, after a shower I feel much better. So I might as well get this started before dinner.

A couple more pre-trip photos:

A few scenic detours along the way:

The wildflowers were out in force. They assulted both the visual and the olfactory senses.

Double secret "shortcut" down to Ballarat:

Another "shortcut" from Panamint Valley Road around the backside of Ash Hill. It is kind of fun to pop out back onto pavement just south of Panamint Springs.

Checkin in-- had another great time in DV-- thanks Joel and everyone who helped put this on! I took a quick ride to China Gardens and Darwin while everyone was packing and heading out.

RiverRat it was good to see you again at the camp. We should do an ADV ride to the hot springs where you stayed sometime. Btw, Darwin was a little red-necky, but not as scary as you described; there weren't any albinos playing dueling banjos, far as i could tell!
:lol3

Wow! Just Wow! Thanks to everyone for all the help. I had a great time. That was my first time on asphalt and my first outing on the KLR. Thanks Toad and Joel for everything. Thanks to Larry and Vern for the advice. It was great to put faces to handles and I am inspired to do more and pass on the good will. I had so much fun and got my very first road rash ever! (Joel will have the photos up and you can all see my badge of honor). Thanks for putting up with my turtle-like speed and not leaving a man behind. That was really cool!
And a special thanks to my brother Jeff. Without his help none of this would have happened and I am grateful to have has the chance to do it.
Can't wait until next time.

Thank you Joel
Thanks to everyone
Made some new friends
Rode with some old friends
I can't wait to do it again
Thanks to Greg? for the beer glass. Every time I see it I will think of the trip
Note to Pirelli: a scorpion lives in the desert, your tires with the same name do not.
There are 2 ways to the springs:

Long way down, and down again, and again, and.....

First off, thanks Joel for putting together a great event!:thumb

Here's what I got for a ride report, sorry there's not too many action photos but it's hard to take photos when your busy trying not to fall over.

I got a late start on Friday due to the normal "family" repsonsibilities, but even with the day running late couldn't pass up HWY 155 over Green Horn.
Still snow on the road with a good deal of sand, but on either side it was a sport bikes dream (by the way, the GSA with a case of beer and 50 pounds of other random crap was no sport bike).

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

After a stop at the bar/restraunt in Olancha (when did they get a cute waitress?) I make it to Father Crowley's overlook just in time to catch the last of the sun on the Panamints.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

At the campsite I begin to meet the faces behind the screen names as a fire starts up and discussion of past and future rides begins. Next day it's TToad leading the "lucky seven" on the noob ride around North Death.

South Pass is in great shape and we make it to the turn off with no snags, other than my gas can getting dragged along as I didn't strap it down properly.

After a quick stop and a chat with River Rat (who was kind enough to bring 10 gallons of gas in for us in his truck!), around 3 cells start off for steel pass with the fast group of SE's in the lead.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

The gravel mixed in with rocks was not pleasant on the big GS. What started out as a fun challenge past the springs ended up being like riding a mechanical bull after a night of drinking http://www.jeremiahweedbourbon.com/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

Although sloppy, I made it around 10 miles up without a spill, then heading into a right turn with way too much confidence and the pig started to give out. After 2 attempts to save it in around 3/4s of a second I decided it was time to get out and jumped off as the bike went down at around 30. BIG THANKS to Roger for loaning the riding boots as I landed in the gravel and did a roll or two. No damage to either me or the tough Fraulein.

After another 5 miles or so I hit this crap.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

After slogging through this far, I made a few more attempts...

but the 1/4 ton beast would not track. (no kick stand needed)

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

I kicked over the bike, turned it 90 degrees brought it up on some untouched gravel and tried again.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

After around 30 minutes of considering my options, Galactic GS appears with a front rim that looks like it was made at a Taco stand. We leave a "nice" note for TToad:fyyff :lol3 , just in case he comes back and decide to ride back to the springs with Galactic GS's bike and leave it at River Rats truck.

Moment of defeat.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

As we start to leave, SF Joe, Dave and Jim all show up over the horizon. They had crossed paths with TToad and he asked them to see how things were going as TToad headed on.

After an hour of beating on Galactic GS's rim like cavemen with whatever boulders we could find in an attempt to make it look less like a taco, Joe and crew put in a tube.

We gear up and head to the springs knowing we've had our "incident" for the day and "What could go wrong?" from here.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

About 5 minutes into the ride, Joe's rim gets bent to hell.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/
Another hour of field maintenance and we're ready to move again. Back down to the Springs and nothing much happens, except Galactic GS's skid plate gets torn off and I get to pick up a nice souvenir (available for purchase in the flea market section).

Now we're at the Springs, so we're set to make it back by 6'ish. Hey, anyone seen Dave? :lol3

Jim and Joe head up the trail to search for Dave while G'GS and I check out the sights and sounds of the Warm Springs.:kat

Joe asked us to hang out until 7, if they don't show, go back and send River Rat.

It's 7,

Here's last light from Warm Springs.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

Here's the rest of the ride.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black

Moon didn't rise till midnight, but the PIAA's on the GSA made for good light.

River Rat's in, we make it back to camp by 9. A non noobian on a GS that rode in while we were leaving wipes out and breaks some ribs. He get's a helo ride out at 3 AM.

As for Dave, I don't want to steal SF Joe's thunder so...:lurk

Next day, Speed Racers are heading to Goler and just about everyone else is packing out. I load up and head for Cerro Gordo.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

(Below)The lovely town of Keeler, apparently some local recident who takes pride in reporting low flying aircraft anywhere near Keeler has gotten two pilots in trouble. Story goes he painted these F-18s on the sign to keep score. I stopped by and wrote down the GPS coordinates of his house:lol3 :kboom

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9...D720/ry%3D480/

Ahhh, the open road.

Thanks all for a great time, see you Fkn Fk's on the next one:freaky
