Toying with the idea of buying one has anyone got any opinions on the bike or experience riding one? Is it ok for single track or more of a desert racer?

As for being fast on single track, I'd reckon 99% of riders would be much quicker on a 250 4stroke.

It'd be a blast on fire trails tho!

I compared the standard specs ie. wheelbase, seat hight, ground clearence suspension travel and weight and it's about the same as a 250. The only problem is getting 82hp to the ground :evil

Having the bigger heavier crank spinning around would make it slower trurning too.


Untill ya hit the throttle and 82 hp quickly turns you arse about face!:lol3

Still own a XL600R 83 couldn't be much worse than that could it :eek1 ?

Depends on the power delivery, in rough stuff it would be a hard bike to ride fast but f#*k it would be fun! CR500s & KX500s are to much bike for a lot of people but thats also why some people love them.:evil

I had a look at the "little" 500 at Conondale on the weekend. Beautifully made piece of kit.

700cc would be fucking scary!!

Unless they've really weaved some Maico magic as per the old 490 I can't see this being much chop. Too vibey and heavy on fuel for longer rides, to much grunt, vibes, flywheel, Hp, everything for off road

Imagine the vibration!! God a >700cc two stroke, you'd be lucky to hold on to it for the vibes. It must have a >100mm bore, therefore a huge slug. Think about it, if it were a 4 cyclinder it would be a 2.8lt. Don't see many 2.8lt 4 pots in performance applications. Too much capacity per cylinder, heavy pistons, vibrations, poor cylinder filling etc. Of the few engines with cylinder capacities this large they need a balance shaft to stop vibes. Apparently the ideal size cylinder (for volume to surface area ratio) and therefore cylinder filling is 300cc as evidenced by F1 3500cc V12, 3000cc V10 and 2400cc V8.

Also at that size it will be slow revving and need a heavy flywheel so it doesn't stall - making it hard to turn.

There has to be a reason why smaller and smaller bikes are getting more popular for offroad use. A big bore is now a 300cc according to the other sane motorcycle makes.

Never know though - those carzy Germans could be on to something!

I owned a CR500 and IT 490 and loved them because after the first bit of a ride not many people bothered asking again.

Some people wouldn't even attempt to ride them no matter how curious they were.

After the 500 I couldn't imagine a 700:loco

I found out they don't meet ADR so that throws my plan out the window. I should have looked into that before getting all excited :1drink .
