Ural does WMRS / Bishop Eastern Sierra's
Well I have been wanting to get down to the WMRS (White Mountain Research Station) ADV ride for a few years now. This year I was able to get the time off and made it a must do this summer. The wife (Marcia) wanted to ride down with me on the Ural so we made it happen.
First off................ Thanks to Stonewall for getting this ride rounded up and Hurty, I B A Fox (I will spell check that) and all the others who made this event happen.:wave Ok so Marcia and I headed for Bishop on Wednesday night after work. Here are the bikes ready to roll. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7290003.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7290002.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7290001.jpg We rode from Napa CA to Angels Camp CA http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7290004.jpg That was pretty much it for day one. We didnt leave like I said tell after work so it was a short ride with dinner and a Hotel stop. Tomorrow the fun begins, Bodie & Mono Lake to Bishop. Teaser shot of the next days ride. Yes we get off road.:evil http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300127.jpg |
Thanks for the teaser :thumb

Day 2 Bodie State Park & Mono Lake CA
We had clutches out by 8ish and headed over Sonora pass to Bridgeport CA Hwy 395. We stopped for a early lunch at a burger joint in Bridgeport and got fuel. Then we hit the road again down to the Bodie cut off.

This is high desert/plains eastern Sierra's. It was some of the most picture perfect riding we have ever seen. Sorry there are a lot of pics.
On the way into Bodie looking to the south towards Mono Lake http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300016.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300020.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300021.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300026.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1030974.jpg Notice the elevation http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300029.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300031.jpg |
Bodie was one of the high lights of this trip. I could have spent all day walking around. Marcia didnt think it was worth an all day thing so we only stayed a few hours. We took a lot of pics here are a few. Bodie is a ghost town once a booming gold mine and lumber town.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300043.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300040.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1030978.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300099.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300100.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1030994.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1030989.jpg |
Ural at wrms
How did the Ural do on the ride up the hill to the research station, I know it was fine to Bodie.
roger'sklr:clap |
Boy, that arctic sure could use some green paint.
We need to get you guys up here... |
great pix!
You got some great 'through the glass' shots of the bar/post office and the schoolhouse. Nice unpopulated shot of the church too. When Mike and I went there were too many people to get a good clean picture.
P.S. Thanks again for the ride in the sidecar, it was the highlight of my trip! :lol3 |
We took the Cotton Wood Canyon cut off out of Bodie over to Mono Lake.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300128.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300129.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300131.jpg Our first good view of Mono Lake http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300133.jpg My riding partner http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300134.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300135.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300136.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300138.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300139.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300140.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300143.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300144.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300146.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300148.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300149.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300150.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300151.jpg Ok so we made it down to the Mono Lake. I had wanted to try and take the dirt road around Mono Lake. I heard that it gets pretty sandy and silty in spots but common how bad could it really be? Well about 4 miles into the attempt to go around the lake off road ADV style we started finding more and more of this. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040076.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040075.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300155.jpg Now you have to remember its high elevation and the Ural isnt jetted for this. So Marcia had to slip the clutch a bit and keep the RPMs up. So she bogged down in this spot so I thought I would just keep on going so I wouldnt loose momentum too. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300152.jpg Check for leaks and loose bolts while youre there.:thwak http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300153.jpg This was a pretty good spill. I had a lot of sand in and on top of the head that was sunk in the sand. The sand was thick and heavy and then sections of silt or bull dust. So after about three spills in the sand and it was getting worse and worse; the day was getting late we decided to turn around. I think we did the right thing. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300154.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300155.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040077.jpg Back out on the tarmac we headed around to 395. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300156.jpg We stopped at a gas station and blew all the sand out of my cylinder head. Then stopped off at the lake. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040078.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300160.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300161.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300162.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300163.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300168.jpg Then it was Hwy 395 down to Brown Owens Camp ground http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7300170.jpg |
Great Photos!! Thanks for sharing your adventure

We got into camp kind of late and set up the tent before it got dark. We had worked up a hunger so we asked Stonewall about dinner. He suggested Toms Place so we hoped in the Ural and rode to dinner. In the morning we had a picture perfect landscape.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310172.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310177.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310180.jpg Kevin and his Dad (Hurty) http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310174.jpg After camping next to Hurty and IBAFox and their land yacht our tent looks a little well small. We also decided that after camping with these guys we need Kermit chairs. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310178.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310179.jpg Hurty's yacht http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040093.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040094.jpg I had a cup of coffee while I looked at some maps. Marcia and I wanted to go for a ride together. Stonewall said he had a ride all planned out and we should tag along. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310181.jpg So it was Stonewall as the guide, Notbetty, GalacticGS, Desertdweller, and Nobetty's boyfriend Mike and us. We hit Chidago road aka Chirizo canyon over to the Red Rock canyon. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310182.jpg I cant keep up with Marcia on fire roads. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310183.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310184.jpg Regroup http://www.galacticgs.com/images/WMR...09-Fri-004.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310185.jpg Mike, Notbetty and Marcia in the Red Rock Canyon http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310186.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310187.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040080.jpg The next few pics are by GalacticGS Starting to sort through my pics. I'm not familiar with all of the SoCal and NorCal crews that showed up for this ride, so I apologize ahead of time if I get some names wrong... I was staying at the McGee Creek Lodge, but rode over to the campsite Friday morning. Met Stonewall, Hurty and some others. Stonewall organized a ride over to the little Red Rock Canyon, so I tagged along. We headed east on paved Benton Crossing Road before it turned to dirt... I think this is Cory (the "andme" part of Hotmamaandme) http://www.galacticgs.com/images/WMR...09-Fri-001.jpg This might be NotBetty leading the way... http://www.galacticgs.com/images/WMR...09-Fri-002.jpg http://www.galacticgs.com/images/WMR...09-Fri-003.jpg On the Chidago Canyon Road which winds through a red rock canyon - Hotmama on the Ural http://www.galacticgs.com/images/WMR...09-Fri-005.jpg http://www.galacticgs.com/images/WMR...09-Fri-006.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040081.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310188.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310189.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310191.jpg Another intersection regroup. GalacticGS and Desertdweller peeled off here and headed south to Bishop for some high speed desert riding. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310192.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310193.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310194.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310195.jpg The rest of the group headed north toward Benton. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040084.jpg Notbetty washed out in a sandy section and whent down. Mike close behind dropped his bike attempting to stop. Both got some sore spots and bruises but for the most part ok. Notbetty didnt want to ride in the sand anymore so Marcia gave her a ride in the Ural to the pavement. The Ural chair came in handy. The Ural also carried a case of bottled water that came in handy too. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040082.jpg Mark and I waited at the bikes for Marcia to get back with Mike so he could ride Notbetty's bike out of dirt to her on the pavement. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...e/P1040083.jpg After we all made it back to camp Marcia and I whent into Mamoth Lakes to get some lunch. Then back to camp and hit the showers. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...s/P7310196.jpg |
Great pics Cory and Marcia! :thumb

Great pic's and report.:clap
It was a good decision to turn around while trying to travel the east side of Mono Lake. I was just there in my Jeep in May and took the same road. After about 6-7 miles, if I recall correctly, the road runs into pure sand dunes. We were by ourselves, so turned around also. Cheap video from inside the Jeep of the road you were on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqABgbEXQNw There is a road further east of Mono that would work just fine. I drove it in the Jeep in 2W and it has "light" sand. In otherwords not deep sand and simmiliar to Cottonwood road. I'd recommend it. http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/45...600x600Q85.jpg |
