Life Begins at 40?

So here I am just about to celebrate my big four oh. They (whoever "they" actually are :dunno) say that life begins at forty, so I'll let you know over the coming weeks, months maybe years.

Just to tie in a couple of previous ride reports as I'll probably update this thread and try keep it going. After reading many reports here and getting some inspiration I finally got the balls to venture off on the bike abroad with the missus. The travelling is very addictive as we've done it every year since. First one here and the second one here.

Here's the plan; We (the missus and I) have got the channel tunnel booked for 15.10 tomorrow afternoon 13/08/09 and we're heading east and making tracks to an ex-pat friend who now lives in Bulgaria, just outside Sofia.

Here's a rough route, subject to change :D

We have booked no accomodation whatsoever and we'll be camping mostly, I wanted to be something of a free spirit for a couple of weeks and not to be tied down to any deadline other than the ferry we've booked for our return on the 29th August.

Here's a couple of snaps;

The steed

The his 'n' hers boxes :feelgood

And somehow I've got to get the contents of the box on the left into our boxes as well as the clothes :scratch

I've currently got 36k miles on the 950 and I've replaced the OEM fuel pump with the facet, I've had a slave cylinder replaced under warranty and I've just fitted this tool tube to carry a few extras, hopefully we'll not be needing them :deal

Now you can't go away without a holiday hair cut  Here's my DIY job :D

Now a better one

And now the missus

Oops :smile6

One more nightshift to work and then we'll be hitting the road. I'll try and update on the road, but if not I'll catch up soon.

Ciao.

Have a great trip!! I am a little envious. I will not get to go to Bulgaria this summer (I grew up on the Black Sea coast). The plan was to go with my wife who hasn't been there yet.

I'll visit vicariously, so post lots of pictures and have a great time :)

Quick Update

We've done 986 miles in two days, on pretty boring motorway just to rack up the miles, my arse is numb! we spent last night in Leuven, the home of the famous Stella Artois, tonight We're 35 miles from Prague in a tiny village and we've just ordered two steaks. I can't believe how cheap the beer is :thumb Two beers 1.46 which is around a dollar! I think I'll be having a few more. I'll try and get some pics up soon. Prague and maybe Poland tomorrow?
Be safe DG :D

DeeGee, looks like a cracking route, have fun and post more of your adventure. Did some of the places you are going to see. Slovakia is nice and was very cheap pre Euro when I visted last year. Stay safe and enjoy:1drink

Home

Just letting you know we're back home safe and sound. We didn't accomplish what we set out to do as we had a problem with the clutch and we lost a couple of days, but more on that later.

A couple of pics and I'll get some more up soon and get the RR in full swing.

Right now I've got myself sorted back at home here we go. I was going to take a snapshot of the mileage covered on the satnav, but after the first day I forgot. :huh

But in total we did 3200 miles and this is how we started.

First night we covered 456 miles and we stayed in Leuven in Belgium. Not many pics here as I was a little shy of getting the camera out in busy places, but that soon changed as the trip went on as you'll see later

Breakfast

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...9/DSCF3852.jpg

Next day we hit the boring motorway to get some miles under our belt and we rode across the rest of Belgium, Germany and into the Czech Republic. The hotel we punched into the satnav wasn't accessable as there was some kind of festival going on in the town centre, the road we were trying to go down was blocked off by the police. We managed to find one though and they charged us 40 for the night including the breakfast and the price of 2 beers was only 1.45 :freaky

This Medieval Church was quite an attraction

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...9/DSCF3853.jpg

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...9/DSCF3860.jpg

Then it was onto Kutna Hora where another famous Medieval Church was famous for another reason, also known as The Church of Bones

Closer

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...9/DSCF3866.jpg

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...9/DSCF3873.jpg

All the ornaments and artifacts are all made of bones from the bodies exhumed from the graveyard. The church was supposedly built on holy ground and because of this reason many people from miles around wanted to be buried there, but there was not enough room, so the bodies were exhumed after a period of time and their bones were moved into the church.
