3 KTM's, A Honda, A Husaberg, and a Jam Tart

AKA Fast Eddy's Better Late Than Never 2009 Opeongo Fall Colour Tour.

This ride was on the weekend of October 23 ( brrrr... very chilly) in Northern Ontario, Canada.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...09Overview.jpg

I was on a Honda XR600R.
Ed was on a Husaberg FE550.
Paul was on a KTM 400 EXC.
Graham was on a KTM 525 EXC,
and Travis was on a KTM 530 XCR.
Steve (aka Jam Tart) did not show up on his KTM 640 Adventure.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08854.jpg

All the bikes had large aftermarket tanks to allow us to go more than 200 km on a fill up.
We started in Winger, where I loaded my Honda on the trailer with Ed's Husaberg and Travis drove us up to pick up Paul on the way to Northbrook.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08793.jpg

Fast Eddie was too fast for my camera.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08795.jpg

We intended to leave at 4:30 pm but Travis had to install a tail light on his bike. Of course, as soon as it was installed he backed the bike into the side of the garage and broke the lense. We didn't end up leaving until 5:30 pm.

Day 1, October 23, 2009.

Day 1.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...ber23Track.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...97511f79_b.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...r23Profile.jpg

Day 1 was cold so we opted to do the trail ride. 3C (37F)

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08797.jpg

We had intended to do over 300 km but the extreme cold, wet conditions and leaf covered trails conspired to shorten the milage, but not the fun.
We started out at 9:40 am.

Note the custom kickstand.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08798.jpg

Note also the wonder trailer accomodations.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08800.jpg

Everyone took a different line through this puddle.
Graham went to the right.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08801.jpg

Travis went to the left.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08802.jpg

Paul took the middle.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08803.jpg

And Ed split the difference.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08804.jpg

We met some very friendly moose hunters on the trail.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08805.jpg

There are very many challenging sections on the 20km long Killer Lake Trail. Lots of deep cold water.

Day 1 continued.

Paul. This was deep and fast flowing.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...our_09_128.jpg

Graham took the best line for his picture taking forcing Paul to get creative.

Lunchtime at Killer Lake.

Ed must have got a bad granola bar!

Day 1 still continued.

Check out this trail section. Looks more like a creek. Deepest one so far.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08815.jpg

Travis stalled in the middle and had to walk his bike out. Very cold wet feet.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08811.jpg

Paul didn't notice but on the previous water hole his air box cover had been dislodged. This resulted in a wave of water entering directly into his airbox and he watered out.

Draining the carb.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08813.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...our_09_133.jpg

Removing the tank.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...our_09_135.jpg

We spent about half an hour there.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08816.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08818.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08817.jpg

Next section. Looks sweet!

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08819.jpg

Travis and I went ahead a bit.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08822.jpg

misterkridered 10-29-2009 08:48 PM

Day 1 still continued.

Here's a video of Travis practising being Moses. He would wheelie through the puddles parting the seas, and Paul would follow right on his ass and pass through before the water came back.

misterkridered 10-29-2009 09:07 PM

Day 1 still continued.

Here they come. Paul said " I'm not going through that f#$%ing thing!"

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08826.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08827.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08828.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08829.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08830.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08831.jpg

Ready for action.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08832.jpg

After taking the photos I was pulling up the rear. The other guys took the center of the bridge and broke a couple of boards on the ramp. So I foolishly took the slippery pine needle covered plywood on the side and slipped off the edge of the bridge. Got stuck is some big rocks and had to wait for Paul to come back and help pull me out.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08833.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08835.jpg

Towards the end of the day I hit a dead tree hiding in the leaves and derailed my chain and badly sprained my thumb.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08850.jpg

End of Day 1. After the first 36 km took us 3 hours we knew we weren't going to be able to do 300 km. Ended up doing 118 km and got back at 3:30 pm.

Back at the Pine Grove Motel. Good cheap motel in the middle of great country.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08838.jpg

While we were inside drinking, Paul was doing a couple of oil changes on his bike to get rid of the water.

At The Northbrook Hotel for dinner.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08837.jpg

Now that's a brandy snifter!:freaky

Day 2 was warmer - about 9C (48F) but rainy.

This would be more of a dual sport ride with more back roads and 309 km. We started at 9:45 am.

Day 2 continued.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...our_09_140.jpg

We came to a missing bridge and in an attempt to find a way through ended up in a sand pit.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08843.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08844.jpg

Ed hit one of those peckerhead rocks hiding under the leaves. No damage.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08845.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08847.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08848.jpg

I didn't take as many riding pictures as I would have liked but it was wet, we were making time and my hand was making it difficult to extract the camera.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08849.jpg

Since Steve had phoned in at the last minute with some lame excuse about having to work we decided to have som fun at his expense.
Don't worry Steve - we found some rum.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08855.jpg

Karaoke.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08856.jpg

Beer and Wine, and lots of hot stuff - habanero chip nuts, wasabi peanuts, pepper jack cheese, and fresh scotch bonnets.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08857.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08864.jpg

Of course Ed got some scotch bonnet on his hands and went for a pee resulting in some burning parts. Don't do this kids.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08863.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08865.jpg

Nice wine glasses!

Day 3 started out with riding to breakfast at the Northbrook Hotel at 9:00 am. Left at 9:30 am for a mostly dirt road ride of 240 km. It was cold and a little black rain cloud followed us for the first three hours. Travis decided to go fishing at an old family camping spot so it was just 4 riders.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...9/DSC08868.jpg

Lunch was at the fantastic bakery in Tamworth. Highly recommended, especially the bread and butter tarts.
And they have good beer too!

This area has an excellent balance of trail and backroad adventure.... highly recommended, you could spend a week easily in the area between Tamworth to Bancroft to Calabogie and not get bored!

Awesome riding with you guys, sorry about the less than 6degC day on friday and all that water.... some years there is NO water on that trail at all except for that little crossing that Travis and Paul got a little wetter than they wanted. It obvisiously did not turn out to be one of them years ;)

Oh and Leaves when they are wet, wow splippery on the hard packed ground! Lots of practice balancing weight distribution on the bike; I'm ready for ice racing with no studs now :)

???????? Kevin, HOW IS THE HAND NOW ?????????

I didn't mind the water, other than the fact that it was freezing cold and seeping into my boots :vardy . The hand swelling is going down but the thumb is still big and sore. Jammed it on a rake last night doing the leaves. :tough
At least it's not broke.
