Stonehenge to Oklahoma - Our Gorge Ride
Katy and I needed a weekend get-a-way so Friday afternoon we hopped on the wees and burned up the slab to Biggs where we spent the night. Didn't take any pictures on the way down as we were trying to beat nightfall.
The view from our room the next morning. http://www.fototime.com/%7BEE306772-...origpict/1.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7B9243AA08-...origpict/2.JPG Cross the river. http://www.fototime.com/%7BD5C62D1F-...igpict/100.JPG Take the old highway up to Stonehenge. http://www.fototime.com/%7B01BBAB24-...igpict/102.JPG Through Maryhill. http://www.fototime.com/%7B506626CB-...igpict/101.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BBF6AFCD1-...origpict/3.JPG You can see Mt. Hood in the distance. Will see a lot more of it today. http://www.fototime.com/%7B85ED784E-...origpict/5.JPG Katy spots this "road" we have to check out. It leads us here. http://www.fototime.com/%7B957CFB07-...igpict/103.JPG Link for Sam Hill history: http://pavementinteractive.org/index.php?title=Sam_Hill Who says wees can't do singletrack. Katy riding back out to the old Highway. http://www.fototime.com/%7B1A5C9E70-...origpict/6.JPG Back on the highway heading west. Good view of Mt. Hood http://www.fototime.com/%7B99C29DC2-...igpict/104.JPG Ride through the town of Lyle. http://www.fototime.com/%7B62B0BF12-...igpict/106.JPG Stop in Bingen/White Salmon to look for the house Katy's father once lived in as a child. Found it. http://www.fototime.com/%7BE6663117-...igpict/107.JPG Nearby Broughton Mill site. http://www.fototime.com/%7BB926D52D-...igpict/108.JPG One other thing we wanted to see on this trip was the old log flume that was used to transport logs to this old sawmill. Katys great uncle was once a flume tender and kept the logs moving down the flume. You are suppose to be able to see the flume near the "Tunnels." Approaching Tunnel #3. http://www.fototime.com/%7B886734E0-...origpict/8.JPG You can barely see part of the old flume near Tunnel #3. http://www.fototime.com/%7B8ED4FE06-...igpict/109.JPG Katys trademark; A deer picture. http://www.fototime.com/%7B97334BDC-...rigpict/10.JPG Look for a hot springs on this road. Never find the hot springs, but the road was fun. http://www.fototime.com/%7BEB5E3ABC-...igpict/111.JPG One of many bikers we pass. The weather was great and the bikers were out. http://www.fototime.com/%7BC4307D03-...igpict/112.JPG Pass through the town of Mill A. http://www.fototime.com/%7B547227DD-...rigpict/11.JPG Then through the much larger town of Willard. http://www.fototime.com/%7BEBF4104E-...igpict/113.JPG Stop for a little break at Oklahoma. http://www.fototime.com/%7BC2364196-...rigpict/13.JPG We then plan to try to make it to Trout Lake. http://www.fototime.com/%7B37054A9B-...rigpict/14.JPG 7 miles later and with a lot of climbing in elevation to do, we decide it may be time to turn around. Street tires suck in snow. http://www.fototime.com/%7BABA272CC-...rigpict/15.JPG On the way back towards the river, I see a road on the GPS that looks like it might take us close to the log flume. It did. http://www.fototime.com/%7BA4F827BE-...rigpict/17.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BE37FDB88-...rigpict/18.JPG Some instructions written on the wall of one of the old shacks on what to do in the case of a log jam. http://www.fototime.com/%7B3263AC3C-...igpict/117.JPG Back along the river. http://www.fototime.com/%7BF02ECB24-...rigpict/19.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BCD3A3103-...rigpict/20.JPG We then head towards Gleenwood. Sign near Husum. http://www.fototime.com/%7B28C12701-...igpict/118.JPG Water Fall in BZ Corner. http://www.fototime.com/%7B842710C4-...rigpict/22.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7B6E3A3D3D-...igpict/119.JPG Bikes passing through BZ Corner while we were at the falls. http://www.fototime.com/%7B554D6170-...igpict/121.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7B2F49B157-...igpict/122.JPG The road from BZ Corner to Glenwood is a very fun and winding road. Also offers lots of views of Mt. That road is also a very fun to ride and winding road. A few miles from Glenwood, there is a viewpoint off the highway that offers a great view of the Klickitat river valley and Mt. Adams. http://www.fototime.com/%7BA7A9CC4F-...rigpict/31.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BA9D60F13-...igpict/127.JPG Back on the highway, one of many bikes we passed on this road. http://www.fototime.com/%7BA5C258A1-...igpict/128.JPG Was having so much fun in the winding sections I really didn't want to stop for many pictures, but this one shows a little of the road. http://www.fototime.com/%7B3FBAC1C7-...rigpict/32.JPG Once we reach highway 142, instead of going on the Goldendale, we turn back towards Lyle. This section of highway is also very winding and fun to ride. Saw this building along the highway. No idea what it was. http://www.fototime.com/%7B6E07E4FC-...rigpict/33.JPG Warm Springs near the mystery building. http://www.fototime.com/%7B8F677A7B-...igpict/130.JPG Saw lots of these cement pillars along the highway. Note the tree growing around the board behind this cement pillar. http://www.fototime.com/%7B0479B7BC-...rigpict/34.JPG Reach the town of Klickitat http://www.fototime.com/%7B391337A1-...rigpict/35.JPG Old mill near Klickitat. It is not possible to get very near this old mill. http://www.fototime.com/%7B5CF5A282-...igpict/131.JPG leaving Klickitat, we see a fun looking highway marked as going to Appleton. We take it. It was a fun road. Looking back towards Klickitat. http://www.fototime.com/%7B9E0EB627-...rigpict/38.JPG The pavement ends a mile or two before we get to Appleton. No problem, we are on the wees. http://www.fototime.com/%7B1D134729-...igpict/132.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BBD659FDC-...igpict/133.JPG The road we took out of Appleton was also dirt for the first few miles. http://www.fototime.com/%7BBEF49DE1-...igpict/134.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BF768F5E1-...igpict/135.JPG We then hit pavement all the way back to the Columbia River. http://www.fototime.com/%7B932CF737-...igpict/136.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7B059D22A7-...igpict/137.JPG We rent a room in the old Bingen School. http://www.fototime.com/%7BD5AE4976-...rigpict/40.JPG http://www.fototime.com/%7BEE96BDCE-...rigpict/41.JPG The rooms even come with a blackboard so you can leave your mark. http://www.fototime.com/%7B19457D40-...igpict/139.JPG End of part 1. Stay tuned for part 2. |

I took the 'shortcut' thru Appleton to Klickitat and Goldendale the last time I went across to Portland. That is a fun road. I remember a sign said Old hwy 8 or 7 or 4. :lol3
I will look for the flume next time. |
Since Steep doesn't have an Avatar I vote that he uses this one.
http://www.fototime.com/%7B19457D40-...igpict/139.JPG Waiting patiently for the rest of the story. :clap |
Yet another cool Steep & Rocky ride! You guys rock. :thumb
I think I read somewhere that the old building outside Klickitat was a bottling plant of some sort... |
MMMM, MMMMM Klikitat!
Spent one fall doing a project at the mill in Klikitat and rode that country. Lovely area and I like the log flume. The old building in your picture IIRC is the ice house. From the boiler like apparatus inside I had assumed it was an ammonia refrigerant type, but I couldn't confirm that. Pencil pushers won't let you spend money to build a building that attractive or durable now days. dd

I think half at least of the 65k I put on my R90S back in the 80's was in the Gorge, Yakima Co. to Portland and back many many times. My kind of country. Don't forget to check out the Maryhill Museum next time. Just a coupla miles from Stonehenge.
:clap |
Not whinning, just saying....Believe it or not, to me (and maybe for others not in your neck of the woods), like many other ride reports, it's frustrating to read Stonehenge/Mt Hood/Oklahoma/town names listed without states, etc.....
Yes...yes....eventually one figures something isn't right.....just saying..... |
OOOHHHH you guys a killing me:becca is it already that time again?? what the @#$% How DARE you have fun :D
Looks like someplace I'd like to ride with the Tigger and Mrs TaterHead. Thanks alot Steep and Rocky:ddog I'm oozing with envy. |

Another great report, I wish we could have some kind of pre-subscription so to not miss any. :thumb |
Nice ride report..:clap It brings back memories of fighting forest fire early 90's and getting caught in the Klickitat Canyon area trapped by the fire. Will never forget watching the planes dropping retardant over our heads. I have always wanted to go back so that area. Thanks for the pictures and drawing on the chalkboard! :lol3
