Airhead Final Drive leak?
 
Hi Guys

Investigating the lack of rear brake power on my R80ST, lead me to brakes and drum nice and wet with what I presume to be FD oil.

Is there a usual culprit? And what does fixing this entails?

No previous work has been done on the brakes or FD, everything can be assumed to be original.

The brake lever shaft runs through the final drive and all that keeps the oil in is 2 riubber "O" rings. one each side.

The one on the drum side will be the culprit but change both.

Later model had duplicate "O" rings. and later again had a different final drive setup and a tube went all the way through.

The double "O" ring mod is popular on the drum side. Use one of the existing shallow grooves and machine it to fit the ring.

My FD seal on my R80G/S leaked in there.

Considering how old these bikes are it probably isn't a bad idea to just replace all the seals and gaskets. I just did all three seals and gaskets on my /5 and it was a fairly pleasant job. You'll need some tools from cycleworks.net. Might as well get the necessary paper gaskets and good Viton seals from them while you're at it. It's so nice having a completely resealed final drive :D

Can you elaborate a bit on your experience?

I`d like to change the camshaft (thats what its called in my clymer) seals without taking the diff apart.

That possible?

The seals in the FD are easy to replace, Four areas which could leak

1- the brake pivot which has two o-rings on it.

2- the front brake shoe pivot point, large pin which has the circlip on it. This is a press fit. The pin can be a loose loose fit. I order to replace you have to remove the FD cover, fairly easy to do. Mine leaked and I used a little bit of epoxy on the pin to fix. should take care of gthe leak. You might try permatex #2 on it too.

Remove outer bolts and insert two 8mm ( or 6mm) bolts and tighten to push cover off from housing.

3- gasket leak on final drive cover.

4- the ring gear final drive seal leak.
