Tasmania Loop

Hiya,
Got the bike ready for a trip to Tasmania an island south of the mainland BIG island Australia with some very nice scenery and roads leaving from Sydney.
Here is what the nice silica roads look like but you have to get there first and its a pretty long way.

Added spot map a bit rough but it will give people from thw rest of the world a rough idea of where I went

Bike packed and looking very clean Ktm 640adv 07

First stop through the national park Garie beach lookout still early and nice no wind, people live in those shacks from the depression era still have leases some really cool ones no road there so you have to cart your supplies in on a wheel barrow.

Coastal cliff road snaking along the cliffs.

Nowra to Braidwood road supposed to be mostly gavel but being upgraded now DO NOT USE IT you get stopped by the road workers and they then escort you at 20kmh max 40kmh for about an hour total waste of time bike overheating and me overheating as well.

using the camping iphone app new free one only for NSW and found this site near Bombala
http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/thats...351738368?mt=8
It just tells you what is around where you are with a brief description this one had a toilet fireplaces that was all i needed
http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...57_3SBYp-O.jpg

I was filling up in Bombala and thought to ask a local directions to the campsite the petrol station attendant says I have no clue but the guy behind you will know. I turn around and it is a National parks and wildlife guy in his uniform, he gets the maps from the display and tells me all the stuff to see how to get there etc off we go on 20km of fire trails great riding.
The road to camp looks like this with forestry trails branching off everywhere
http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...85_c9SS7-O.jpg

The campsite in amongst the tall woods after some great gravel tracks

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...22_pGjHy-O.jpg

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...95_Ym9mv-O.jpg

Found this fresh mushroom so cooked it up with some Army stuff

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...59_Vyh35-M.jpg

I cooked this meal up then the gas cylinder ran out so need a new one
soon

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...78_Dyjur-O.jpg

This is what the roads from the campsite look like back to the main road and Delegate in the morning

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...10_TAUwr-O.jpg

The logging is pretty savage

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...61_i6xKf-O.jpg

A lot of exploring to be done in this area there were tracks branching off all the main roads

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...56_KsAye-O.jpg

maccajim 03-27-2010 10:17 PM

The Twisty road to Delegate absolutely amazing I see why the Victorians use it a lot at one stage there was a sign saying 65km of windy road i thought it meant 6.5km but it just goes on and on plus the scenery is superb.

I stopped to take this photo and a local stopped to ask if i was ok

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...76_XpF59-O.jpg

This was the guy stopping to see if i needed help

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...87_5CDCK-O.jpg

A toilet stop beside the road you get scenes like this the whole road has stunning scenes I only took these few definitely ride this road heaps of fun.

Great posting! I had no idea Tassie was so green; for some reason I kind of had the impression it was a desert.

More pics! More pics!

Anna 03-28-2010 02:01 AM

I believe those pics are taken on that little island north of Tassie. :evil
Tassie is actually even greener than that. :thumb

Looking forward to more pics of my home-island. It's a beautiful place for motorcycling - on the road ond off as well.

maccajim 03-28-2010 02:31 AM

yeah

Your right i haven't even caught the ferry yet spirit of Tasmania it gets much greener in fact it rained every day i was on the island.
Will post more tomorrow

Marcbar 03-28-2010 03:03 AM

???????

I thought Tassie was a part of Australia not an island south of Australia.
Ya don't want to get those Tassie blokes off side!

maccajim 03-28-2010 01:48 PM

Arrived in melbourne on a very hot day 30c and tried to find the ferry terminal as GPS was not showing how to get there. They treat bikes well in melbourne you can park on the footpath anywhere.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...94_42n8r-L.jpg

Just after this photo i ran into a fellow ADV rider with same bike as mine who gave me directions to the ferry thanks very much.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...70_3UtFK-O.jpg

Lining up to get on the ferry sucked especially for bikes it was hot and just creeping line I couldn't keep the bike on as it was overheating and melting the clutch so had to push it, that silver Subaru next to me overheated as well.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...15_cesUp-O.jpg

Finally strapped down on the ferry at 9pm time for a shower and beer it has been a very long day started riding at about 7am.
http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...20_cU567-O.jpg

The BMW next to me was a guy from Tasmania who had just spent 3 weeks on the mainland they did about 8000kms and also did the crap Braidwood road resurfacing section i had to endure, we met for beers and i got some local info on where to go etc.

maccajim 03-28-2010 02:02 PM

Cabin on the ferry not bad everything i needed.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...52_79TPx-O.jpg

There are a few decks and outside spots but the ferry is best described as a floating RSL with bars and even pokies which are gambling machines for wasting time. There was even entertainment with a singer and karaoke from the crowd please get me off this boat.
http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...66_Kr3wh-M.jpg

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...12_cQvgF-O.jpg

The ferry wasn't that bad I met the 2 Tassie BMW riders that went over some maps with me and told me some good roads and camp spots to try out thanks very much guys!

Finally I arrived in Tasmania and it was raining so don all the rain gear and head out of town to Scotsdale
heading to the east coast the road is great very twisty my first view point.
http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...85_iN6yw-O.jpg

The view

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...72_xtREz-M.jpg

Constant rain so i headed into town and got a dodgy 70's style room to wait out the rain it just hangs
in the air and is very hard to see the road

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...64_Pd8pv-M.jpg

My place for the night at the back of a pub cheap but dry

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...71_RFh3c-O.jpg

I met with some discrimination i this town big signs saying no thongs or ugg boots allowed in the Bistro so i had to splurge on some
appropriate footwear, dunlop volleys.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...46_NVkTT-M.jpg

Next morning i headed to the coast and found this beach where they train trotting horses it seems
very popular here, the weather was still raining as you can see.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...26_eKTTF-O.jpg

I then found this road very nice and heaps of fun the rain means no dust and surprisingly not slippery
perfect riding conditions.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...41_8ARSZ-O.jpg

Very fun road only saw 3 cars

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...05_LpYxG-O.jpg

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...34_cY7Rd-O.jpg

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...71_ELEtg-O.jpg

The pub in the paddock very touristy as i got here on the weekend, the pig having a nap

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...63_EMv7g-O.jpg

The North East coast Bay of Fires very beautiful and the weather cleared up a bit as well.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...67_XN8vy-M.jpg

It is basically these rocks with a red lichen covering them but when you combine the colors and the views they are
spectacular.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...90_fFYY2-O.jpg

Down some dirt roads you come to beaches like this and they let you camp for free whynot.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...40_92nrj-L.jpg

Keep going north and you get this view crystal clear water and spectacular views of the ocean along entire strip of road.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...88_VpJmi-L.jpg

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...94_4CjWC-L.jpg

Great place to stop for a beer.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...29_i97cR-O.jpg
around about here
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&s...=12,89.07,,0,5

This is the road that gets you there a tiny strip like a goat cart track takes you right next to the beach with lots of twists and turns
great views along the entire road.

My gear for camping comfy chair is a must

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...32_2bUVT-O.jpg

A guy with a moving house on wheels setup felt sorry for me and gave me some firewood good stuff one log lasted all night, he had been here 3 weeks so time to move on.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...86_jucDN-M.jpg

Discreet toilet as well

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...56_DchZC-L.jpg

Here is my campsite under the tree you can just make out my bike, the pole in the foreground signifies the start of the beach.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...46_QCv6d-L.jpg

This is the beach very nice spot no wind plenty of firewood just a lot of possums.

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...93_X3aia-L.jpg

Sunset

http://maccajim.smugmug.com/Travel/t...59_NP9WS-L.jpg
