Death Valley in the Spring with Mr. Cob and the Noobs 2010

The wife and I have been meaning to get down to Death Valley for a few years now. Mr. Cob takes a big group of Urals down there in February. Since we got our Ural we just havent been able to make it down there for the Sidecar thing. Neither of us had ridden Death Valley other than just cutting through on the pavement. So we planned on making it down this year.

Then there is the Death Valley March Noobs ride that I had been wanting to get down to and ride.

So we made the plans and made it happen. This is PART I the Fubruary issue.

Day one we rode down from Napa CA to Lost Hills CA after work. Stopped and got a hotel for the night it was pretty chilly and windy.

Day two we took hwy 5 down over the Tehachapi's into Death Valley.

Morning at the hotel

We pulled into Panamint Springs camp ground, the only place that had any space! The park was totally full. Good news is they have bathrooms and showers on site and a restaurant and GAS!

So we picked our site and pitched the tent.

A VW buggy club was there with some really cool rigs. They all wanted to see the Ural so it worked out.

This nice couple came over with some snacks to share. A nice treat in the desert after a long day.

We fired up the camp stove after nice hot showers and made some dinner and called it a day well spent.

Day three

Next day we knew Mr. Cob would be arriving that day. We didnt have the time to spend like the rest of the group showing up later in the week. So knowing Mr. Cob was arriving that day we decided to ride over to Furnace Creek and see if we could find him and go for a ride.:ricky

We fired up the war wagon's and rode over the pass into Death Valley propper.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...b/P1050870.jpg

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...V/P2141033.jpg

We rode into Stove Pipe Wells and stopped for some reason I cant remember. Marcia and I where talking and this guy comes up (people approach the Ural all the time) but this guy looks familiar and he asks "Are you guys here for the Ural Assault?" It was Mr. Cob eating a ice cream bar. I guess he stops off there every year and has a ice cream. Anyway so we found him. He had just arrived and still needed to set up camp at Furnace Creek. He said he would love to go for a ride up Echo Canyon today! So we followed him to his spot and helped unload his trailer.

Hotmamaandme 05-20-2010 11:48 AM

We got his Ural unloaded (the one he toured the USA on) and the camp set up. He had a couple of friends with him one on a KLR and the other on a Husky 610. So we all headed to Echo Canyon.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...V/P2141038.jpg

Marcia was kind of nervous about riding the Ural with Mr. Cob,she did just fine. We got to the turn off for Echo Canyon and Mr. Cob just took off and so did Marcia. She kept up pretty good with him and all the nervs just left once that throttle opened. :lol3

We got to the top and stopped and took some pics. Mr. Cob was impressed with Marcia's riding and gave her Ural the once over for pointers.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...V/P2141045.jpg

On the way back down Marcia now a little more loose and comfortable started sliding the bike around the corners. Until she came into one corner a little hot and the deep gravel wouldnt let the bike slide. So a slide that plowed a row of gravel until it tipped the bike up on the left side crash bar sending Marcia rolling off. It was all kind of funny to watch. She was fine and was having fun. The bike was fine we just had to knock all the gravel off.

Back on the bikes no damage done. Mr. Cob at this point took off in front and we didnt see him until the end of the canyon. He was flying.:ricky You can see his dust cloud in this pic.

Marcia had the Go Pro cam on the side car on the way down the canyon. She got the crash on film but it looks pretty soft. The only problems was its such a long video i have to cut it up to load it which i dont know how to do. The other thing is the sun was in the camera on the way down in some parts. Live and learn.

It was getting late in the day so we say goodbye to Mr. Cob and friends and start heading back to camp. We stopped at the borax mines on the way back.

I told her there was a breakfast special over at the restaurant the only way i could get her up. So we had breakfast over at the cafe. We sat outside watching the sun come all the way up filling the valley with warm rays of orange and yellow sunshine.:lol3
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...V/P2151076.jpg

We had talked with Mr. Cob the day before about heading over to the Race Track for todays ride. He thought that it would have water so it would be pointless. Marcia and i talked about it over breakfast and decided to go anyway ourselves. At least we would see Tea Kettle Junction. If we had time we would head over to Ryholite. So headed out just the two of us.

If you have never been out to the Race Track its a must see. Just getting there is cool. Go when its not hot Feb or March. I am fascinated with Joshua Trees. There is a cool Joshua Tree valley on the way to the track. It was just a picture perfect day for us. Blue sky white ridgelines and no one around

We found an old glass screw top to some type of bottle on the ground near the junction. No bottle just the glass screw top. Marcia's gas jug had lost its top to the hose and it was starting to collect dirt. The glass top fit perfect in the hose to kept dirt out.

There are two ways to get to or from the Race Track. The way we came via Scottys Castle or Lippencott Mine road. You will see on part II the March issue the other route. Lippencott is a much tougher rougher jeep road. Having never been on it at this time with Marcia we decided to just go back the way we came. We had plenty of time to ride over to Ryholite so thats what we did. Having rode up and then back down Lippencott Mine road now I can say the Ural could have gone down Lippencott Mine road but not up. Maybe if you wanted to beat your Ural up it would go up it maybe but its not what we like to do.

Ok so back the way we came to Ryholite.

Ryholite is famous for this plaster last supper scene. It used to be an old mining town. Its not in Death Valley its in Nevada.

We had decided at the Race Track on our break to head back home the following day. Titus canyon was still closed due to snow as well as Saline Valley and West side road. So with the knowledge of a lot of the park still closed and returning with the NOOBS in March we said we would take a couple days a ride slow home.

Marcia wanted a better pic of the sand dunes on the way back to camp. Again our point and shoot cameras cant do this scene justice.

Day five

We broke camp early and fueled up. We headed south out of the park from Panamint Springs. As we started out through the valley two jet fighters started chasing each other all over the valley. I kid you not they even flew in low a few times and wavied at the Ural.:lol3 If you look close at this video and a couple pics you can see the jets.
