Solo to the Chiricahuas - Two Up Back to PHX

Memorial Day Weekend - 2010

I took Friday off to make it a nice four days. The mercury is threatening triple digits in the deserts. I decide to avoid the rush north and try to squeeze in one more SE AZ ride.

Queen Creek Tunnel
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...26_MVCv2-M.jpg

Popping out of the tunnel I feel a little over-exposed.

I found the old Main Street of Miami, Arizona one block off of the highway.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...46_ZdR64-L.jpg

This looks cool. I park the bike and take a photo walk.

A Company Town
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...17_TMah2-S.jpg

So, I was standing in the street taking photos when I had a funny feeling. I thought, Maybe I should be on the sidewalk. Nah, there's hardly any traffic here...

Suddenly, CRUNCH!!!
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...29_xTtrh-M.jpg

I turn to see a traffic collision 1/2 a block away. No one was hurt. Both drivers hop out, shake hands, and the cops are there in two minutes. I didn't witness it, so I didn't stick around.

Back on the bike I take the business loop through the historic downtown of Globe.

I'm really cookin' across the San Carlos Apache Reservation on the U.S. 70.

globe thru the salt river up to the white mountain apache res and then on to showlow was a nice ride.

dave6253 06-05-2010 08:59 PM

Straight past the prison we go...
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...68_24qQJ-M.jpg

and up the twisty climb on Mount Graham.

I find a shady and cool spot to gobble down my foot long lunch.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...09_KfKVq-M.jpg

http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...7_CX5iK-XL.jpg

The lunch stop was not very long. There was a tempting twisty road ahead.

The pavement ends 12 miles before the dead end at Riggs Lake. I've been up this mountain several times, but have always been in to much of a hurry and turn around long before reaching the lake.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...2_irFKM-XL.jpg

The snow won't last long. It's in the mid-eighties.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...07_dd5Hz-M.jpg

http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...62_rmUqs-M.jpg

I made it to Riggs Flat Lake! Small.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...95_fWkch-M.jpg

The bike rests in the shade for a few minutes.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...7_bQLBB-XL.jpg

Thens it's back down. I had a scary moment when I hit a deep rutted section. The ruts had been filled with deep and loose gravel. I was not paying close attention and was startled when the bike began to buck back and forth. I got on the gas and made it out.

Actually, my wife and kids drove up yesterday to get a good campsite. Since I had to work thursday, I got to ride my motorcycle on a family camping trip!:super

Chiricahuas

I spent the next two days hiking with my family. I didn't get much riding in mainly because the road I wanted to ride, Pinery Canyon, was closed due to a forest fire.

On Sunday we visited the Fort Bowie National Historic Site. it requires a 3+ mile hike. I tried hiking this on my last motorcycle trip, but turned around after the first half mile when I realized motorcycle pants and boots aren't good for walking.

Nikki's Big Adventure

My daughter Nikki is almost twelve.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...92_zKG5z-S.jpg

She never showed much interest in motorcycles, until I started going on rides with her younger brother. I tried to warn her that I was taking the scenic route home and it will be long and HOT. She insists it's her turn.

So off we go!

The squirmy gravel road was a little nerve-racking with the precious cargo aboard. Nikki later said she could feel the motorcycle sliding around and thought I was doing it on purpose.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...77_fBrtT-M.jpg

We roll into Tombstone just like so many cowboys before. Okay, we were moving a little faster.

Montezuma Pass to Parker Canyon Lake

He head towards the Mexican Border and hang a right into the Coronado National Monument.

http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...69_denmy-M.jpg

There was new asphalt in the park and it had me wondering. Did they pave all of the twisty road up Montezuma Pass?
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...83_49iJo-M.jpg

No. There is still a twisty, narrow, and bumpy dirt road to the top. We stop at the summit of the pass.
http://dave6253.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...80_ckeRm-M.jpg

I see Mexico!

Wonderful photos! What with the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and other places, it seems the Chiricahuas get so little respect. Beautiful area, one of my favorites. Neat to see the family in on the ride.

Nice ride the wife and I need to head out to Coronado National Forest. The road out to Riggs lake looked like a blast.

XLNT RR Pics, if I can ask, what camera are you using ?

Used 2 cameras. A Pentax K7 DSLR, and an old Panasonic TZ5 point-n-shoot. The TZ5 is beat up and in fact, retired after this trip. It has been replaced by a Panasonic ZS5, which is a newer generation of the same basic camera. We'll see how well it does at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this weekend.
