Sport Bike to an Enduro or Dual Sport

During the Memorial Day Weekend of Twenty Ten, two months after I earned my motorcycle endorsement :clap and ultimately becoming an inmate of the ADV riders group :fyyff , I ran into this fellow and his beast....

The Fellow... :1drink

His Beast... :D

After staring at this beast for a few minutes, it dawned on me that underneath all that shiny, custom, steel mods is in fact a Ninja 650r. I said to myself, "Wow, that's pretty cool! I have one of those!" my next thought was, "Is this guy bored?"

Another two months later...

I wonder if I'm bored?
What is this picture exactly?

That's me! Removing the first bolt.
45 minutes later... all the plastic is gone!! :eek1

So as you can see, I've decided to make the plunge and convert my 650r to an Enduro/Dual Sport. We will call him EN-ja.

For now, I will say good night to you inmates and to EN-ja. Tomorrow, I will continue my search for and/or design of: headlights, fog lights, mirrors, turn signals, crash bar, hand guards, custom fabricated radiator guard, gravel guard, guard for coolant tank, guard for map sensor, tires, luggage rack, saddle bags, mounts for dash, brackets for gas can holders, custom gas can holder, gas cans, reinforced kick stand, and the list goes on and on...

Oh no! What have I gotten myself into?? :huh :huh :huh

Versys?

I'm no expert and am not trying to talk you out of it, but are you sure that guy doesn't have a modified Versys? Just suspension mods alone, you're looking at...ouch :eek1 Maybe for stature reasons you want to keep it low? This means less clearance for ds'ing though. Life's a series of "leaning experiences"! :evil

Subscribed! :clap Looking forward to seeing the process.

Way cool. After seeing a few bikes make this transformation, some good, some awfull and should be taken to the scrape yard before getting on the road and then some totally awsome. Do it right so that ppl will envy you for your creativity.
Good luck:clap

good luck Shiela!!! and remember to double check the clearance between your front tire and anything you might choose to bolt behind it! :evil

Hi RoaringDS, it is definitely a 650r. Same year as mine as a matter of fact. As far as suspension goes... my thoughts are to keep it stock. Mainly because I'm barely 5'4" and also I don't plan on going way overboard when off-roading, mainly fire roads and forest roads. If I do encounter I'm missing out on ds'ing... I'll just have to extend my legs. :lol3
And I definitely agree, life's a series of "expensive" learning experiences!

Wish me luck dhillr! I can't wait to see the finished project! Out of curiosity, would you mind if I use your tire swapper thing when it's time to swap out my tires?? :lol3 :eek1
