Ed on an Anniversary ride

This is just a quick trip report to point to when people ask what I did on our anniversary.

Leshia and I were married on Memorial day weekend 28 years ago. We decided to go to Las Vegas to celebrate so she gets a plane ticket and I take off a few days prior to pick her up at the airport there. :deal

It worked out real well. I got in a nice long ride and we both got to enjoy what Las Vegas has to offer. As a bonus we did not have to rent a car since I brought transportation with me.

I am blasting across Kansas and came across this on a gas stop. Those that know me know why I take these pictures.

Then it was just long straight roads but I got in a pretty good day.

Here is a next morning picture of the cool camping spot I found.

Then it was more long roads in open country. Very beautiful.

When traveling by motorcycle I am a sucker for historical markers. There was one pointing down a gravel road that took me to Fort Wallace Cemetery. Interesting history there.

There were a lot of this type marker. I could spend a hour or two reading them.

These big open roads tempt a person to open it up a bit. Sometimes a bit too much.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...97_iWtz2-M.jpg

I kept my promise and slowed it down through the rest of Colorado but it wasn't easy.

The Rockys come into view.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...98_VVXjc-M.jpg

I finally made it into the mountains.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...51_UWiTa-M.jpg

I had never been to Mesa Verde and the Cliff Dweller ruins so I decided this was a good time to stop. Tax payers have spent a ton of money making this area accessible to the public. It was worth it. Try to get there sometime.

That was just a few of the pics from this area. I think you could spend most of a day here.

edstoll 09-11-2010 06:37 PM

The access road in and out of Mesa Verde is full of scenic vistas and stunning views. It was getting pretty dark so my pictures suck. Trust me it's really cool.

I rolled into Cortez and set my tent up on an abandoned state truck scale. A great day in the saddle.

I got up the next morning to a before daylight breakfast and headed for Four Corners.

I circled it with my bike so I could be sure to add all those states to the ones I have visited on the V-Strom. :norton

The local Indians set up shop to sell trinkets to tourists. The dog was friendly.

I was very happy with the next leg of the trip which was southern Utah. I was very impressed with the scenery.

That almost makes the long, flat straight road getting there worth it! :1drink

I had planned to take the long way here and catch the ferry across Lake Powell. I thought it would be cool but not $15.00 cool. I was also out of sync on the timing so I would be waiting nearly an hour for it. I decided to take the shorter route across the bridge and was not disappointed.

I stopped for gas at the Hollow Mountain.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...90_ZKnVw-M.jpg

I rode on through Glen Canyon, Dixie National Forest, The Grand Staircase and Capitol Reef. All very scenic and fun to ride.

Then I got to Zion National Park. I want to say it is beautiful also and it is but I had issues there. First I have to pay $12 to drive through. Cars are $25. The next thing is the road construction. You are paying money to follow RV's and tourists in cars on a dusty road behind pilot trucks. And that is when you are not stopped waiting for the pilot trucks.

One bright spot through Zion was a walking trail my brother informed me about that you park and walk about 20 minutes to a scenic spot called Canyon Overlook. It is worth the walk. My pictures are very bad because of the late hour I was there.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...40_oKWP3-M.jpg

I finished the construction hampered drive out and was real disappointed in the area after leaving Zion westbound. It is all tourist stuff. I finally got free of that and rode to St George and found a very good place to camp in an RV park there.

It was a long day and a great ride.

edstoll 09-13-2010 06:46 PM

I slept great at St George and got up early. I had a big breakfast and took off as the sun started up. I have driven through the gorge on Interstate 15 many times in the past so I took the scenic route today.

This was the day Leshia was going to be flying in so I rode on in to Las Vegas on a nice curvy highway.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...82_MnL6T-M.jpg

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...80_gx9d7-M.jpg

I checked into our hotel and dropped off my luggage so I could carry Leshia and her luggage from the airport.

I could tell you what happened next and show you pictures but as you know ---- what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

After celebrating a few days I decided to do some bike repairs. The chain was getting real noisy so I picked up a new one and a front sprocket that had one extra tooth. I picked up a few hand tools and switched it out in the Autozone parking lot.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...86_xYG47-M.jpg

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...60_LiVqH-M.jpg

That bigger front sprocket made a huge difference on the ride home.
and what a ride home it was. 1452 miles in under 34 hours. I am always in a hurry to get home.

http://edstoll.smugmug.com/Motorcycl...43_VTpRB-M.jpg

3514 miles for the whole trip.
That's all folks. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

MrBob 09-19-2010 12:09 AM

Thanks for sharing your ride with us. Riding through the SW is the best. If you get back to the 4 corners area and like to visit ruins, Hovenweep and Chaco Canyon will amaze you.

CaptainAttila 09-19-2010 10:23 AM

Very nice! Thanks.
