Spring Break in the Ochoco Forest

I know weather in March is questionable at best but so it is in February, but look outside. So weather permitting I'm going to truck my DR and big camp gear set up i.e. the propane cooking, lighting and heating stuff over to Wildcat Campground. I'm planing to arrive Friday the 18th of March and stay for a long weekend. How long the weekend is will be determined by how much fun I'm having. School starts back up the 28th so I'd like to be back in a few days before that.
If you are reading this you are invited to ride along. I'f you've been following Applejams adventures the road sign in Ashwood that points to Trout Creek points to what I suspect is a thru route to the area we'll be in.
Wildcat Campground is east of Prineville and is easiest reached by heading east on Hwy 26 then at Ochoco Reservoir turn north on Mill Cr rd(FS 33) should be up 10 or so miles. Lots of old mines and rock collecting in the area so we might need to be aware of private property.
So who's in, or at least a maybe due to the iffy weather?

*<update>UPDATE* 3/16/11 We'll be camping on the Crooked River south of Prineville do to the low snow levels. Hope to see at least some of you there!</update>

in !!

Edit: I wanted to capitalize "IN" to add some attitude, but it won't let me....

pg 63 & 64 in yer benchmark book,,

we did one of the ODR rides based out of a campground next to the FS Big Summit work camp, on Ochoco Creek. Nice campground, clean restroom, good water, and fishing in the creek right there! And access to all the roads in the system from there too.
Ride past the Ochoco Reservoir, and take the right just before riding up the mountain on 26. It's further from town, and more out of the way,so, less used, and less crowded than the wildcat cmpgrnd.

I saw that there, the only reason I picked Wildcat is that's where as a wee young tadpole I've camped with my parents. Care to share epic rides or things to avoid while over there? I can be at the Pad tomorrow Benchmade in hand. Any guidance would be groovy, I've rode around the area on the V-strom a bit but not anything more adventurous than Twickenham road.

yes

i will do my best to awaken the 2 remaining brain cells, to see if they can agree to walk down the hall of memory together and provide some direction,,or at least a slight recollection.
too bad Sector ain't here, she has a functioning brain, and could probably recall road numbers, and such. All I know,, you can go from Big Summit to Post,Paulina,or the other direction, to Mitchell,, with a spider web of roads connecting, some boring,,and the same for east and/but/tho, not so much to the west, snow should be there now.
March might be a doable ride, what with all the glow-ball worming and stuff. But I doubt it!,,bring yer warmest camp slippers!

Normally, march is pushing it for a ride in that area,,May would be nicer for snowgone conclusions,,Brrrr! is NOT my favorite response in more than one imagined aspect of earth/ space/ human interactions,,,,

you know what?

maybe I dreamed the whole thing!

We'd better go see!
[edit]
with a more clear vision,, I read and absorb the proposed date,,, March!

that's like the month right after the one we're in,,no way!
cold, and more cold in them elevational sleeping bag spots! ice cramping,,for you younger kids!

That's a cool area. Here's a nearby trail. It might be interesting this time of year... Green Mountain OHV Trail

Please post pictures of Dr. stuck in snow.

I guess I made the mistake of posting that the "Ochocos were calling me", and that I'd never been there, only passed quickly by on Hwy26.

So when this tough bastard starts this thread just a day or two later.....
How could I wuss out?

So quit brrrr-ing on our parade Peterman :D, For sober guys, we've been doing pretty good so far avoiding the reality that this is likely a silly thing to do in March, and then one of the ADVers that's prolly the best at chemically avoiding reality steps up to harsh our buzz :cry
(From what I've heard...:lol3)

We're not gonna get cold, we're gonna invite the ADV master fire builder his-elf, Link-Wee-Wee! I'll bet he can keep a 50' circle warm and dry.

I do got to say though, weather wise this was looking like a better idea two days ago. <shrug> You can live life or watch it pass you by. I ordered up a pair of tires for the occasion thinking that my 13 year old well worn tires might not be the right tool for the job. I'm went with the MT-21's.

Oh, and since the sober thing came up, I don't care if others imbibe, I drank more than my share early on in life, and just don't care to anymore. I quit cigarettes as well and figure it's about the same thing.

You posted it, what were thinking?
Naw, just kidding, it sound like an adventure rain or shine. And if it snows, we can just go to N. Cali somewhere and take pics there, nobody'll know the difference...

So, you're still thinking about it Peterman ?...?...
there's no better place to say "I told you so" than from the tent next over........:lol3

I'm not known for my thinking things thru skills, but I do have fun, I rode the diamond lake 200 on my first DR 650 with street tires and 2 hours of off pavement experiance, then rode the OBDR #3 the next year with not a lot more experience though I did put knobbies on for that. Bottom line is I watched my parents save for their retirement only for my Dad to have a brain anurisem and my Mom having to take care of him for 9 years. Made me decide to live life now and if I get a speeding ticket or a broken rib living my life so be it, sure beats falling off the couch and drowning in the tear filled Cheetoes bag. :D
