1986 r80g/s
 
I'll be looking at an R80G/S this friday. It just showed-up for sale and since they"re rare...
So the question is: What should I checked first? I currently own a 1986 Transalp.
I really don't know much about airheads! And that would be my first BMW...if I buy it!
Any advice?

Find an experienced airhead fan to go with you, after getting him/her to swear they won't buy it out from under you. If the price is in line with it's condition, buy it. A late R80G/S is too cool to pass up.

The only thing hard to find for these bikes are instruments and body panels.

It comes with a few spares... I'd ask about what work (engine internals i.e. pistons & valves) and gearbox repairs, carb rebuilds have been done. If he's kept it serviced and running I'd try to knock a bit off the price. If it is what you want then they don't really come up for sale in your area too much... so an extra few hundred dollars for something local sounds about right... as long as you are happy doing any major work yourself due to a potential lack of local airhead mechanics. If you take it and don't like it let me know and maybe we could work something out. :ear

Well...it comes with a second set of wheels with knobby tyres. Frame and body were repainted, fork seals replaced. From what I remember. It's a Paris/Dakar edition. Fork bearing replaced too. Rear brake and air filter and new battery. 70 000km on the clock. Corbin seat...(wich I would replace with a solo seat) BMW tank bag, Original Krauser cases, crash-bars....of course it's a Paris/Dakar! Seller is asking $5000.00 (cdn) FIRM. Says both engine transmission/final-drive are in "very good condition".
I'll be there on friday...with my trailer. Since it's a 2-3 hours drive... Too bad I don't know a airhead specialist!

Man, sounds like a fair deal. The wheels alone could sell for a grand!!!

How many miles??? Look for the kick starter sticking out from the side cover, it should be tucked into the side cover a wee bit. I forget what gets bent or messed up when the kick sticks out, but doesn't mean the tranny is toast though.

Patched together wiring under the front fender too.

Ask about oil changes and such, the regular maintenance. If it has over 80,000 miles, you might figure a top end job is in it's future and sometimes tranny bearings fail near this time. Grab the rear and front wheels to check for excessive play. If the frame and body have been repainted I bet it's been taken care of. Probably had the tranny out for that and lubed the splines and inspected or replaced clutch.

Oh yes I have seen that ad, been posted for about 3 weeks.

Too bad I am not there right now, I certainly would have gone and looked at it, I could use a bike out there, and brought my compression gauge/leak down tester.:wink:

Looks like he replaced all the bearings....good thing but I just hope the PO did not give up after looking at the price of other parts needed and decided to sell for that reason. Just what is happening with the 87 100GS I have in pieces right now, but the opposite he did the tranny and gave up on the bearings/driveshaft then lied to me. :huh

Missing a mirror,left is non-OEM. Missing both side covers. OEM rear shock never lasted more than 15,000 kms for me...????

Looks good, price is about right but expect to spend more if you want it truly "collector".

Mirrors are no major issue....however, I just read side panels are "hard to find".
Hope the seller still has them, even in bad shape. I'm not really looking for a "collector-grade" bike, but side panels are a must. What would be a corect compression reading on this motor? 130-150?...

You can get aftermarket side pannels, and I have a spare set that require tab repairs if you are in need.

I think the bottom spec is ~110 where service (rings) may be required if lower, my 1981 R80G/S is at 150. The old line is the two sides should be within 10% of each other I believe

Maybe I could buy your side panels...who knows? I know old bikes are full of surprises.
First time looking at an airhead.
Still, I'm happy to know after-market panels are available.
I got my own compression gage and will perform the test on friday morning.
Seeing me arriving with a trailer doesn't mean i'm buying anyway!

Compression is: over 145 PSI Good, just like the one I just bought.:clap
123-145 PSI Normal
Below 123 Poor, just like the one I sold with full disclosure, needed expensive valve work.:wink:

Most shop manuals will tell you to remove the carbs to do that....I just remove the intake pipes and use a chopstick to hold the slides up. Funny never made any difference on both GSs I have owned, slides up or down, same compression readings. Same with an R65 I just tested.....and others over the years.

I'd be tempted in your case to do it quickly with everything in place, throttle open, if the readings are questionable maybe talk him into removing the intakes and do it with the slides up.

Still questionable readings, a little oil down the cylinders....readings go up is rings. Do not go up, valves.

Valves have to be adjusted in spec, that can make a big difference and don't forget to ground the plugs.

Twice in Alaska I had to take the coils off my then new GS and install them on R80s G/S to help the owners track down their misfirings......good question for the owner. Updated coils???

Well...yes we still got green grass over here! But for how long?
Question: Was the R80g/s available as "Paris-Dakar" in 1986 or is it jus an added kit?
(sorry for my "not-perfect" english)

As far as I know, the G/S PD (with the big 32Litre tank) was made between 1984 and 1986.

Check the build date by entering the VIN number here: http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html

If it's not a 1984-6, then the tank is an add-on.
