Dt400
 
I am building a DT400 into a lite weight ADV bike. Before i had kids, my only transport was a RD400. Anyway the plan is to bin the cdi and fit points, up grade the front brake, and fit a bigger tank.

Just wondering why you want to ditch the CDI?

I went the other way with an old 75 DT250 because I found points are a pain in the arse...

Points are easy to keep going. When the cdi sh*ts it's self your stuck.

Are the cdi ignition modules known for failure? I have a 78 dt400 and it's still going strong. So thats 34 years now. So, just exactly when is yours going to quit? If it really makes you nervous, maybe try to pick up a replacement module and just have it on hand. Just an idea.

Agree....just carry a spare CDI...way better system.

The CDI in my '80 YZ465 still works well as does the supposedly failure prone ignition on my '84 RZ350. Points on a two stroke are a real pain in the ass. You may want to reconsider that move.

I have had heaps of bikes, & cars with points, never had a drama with any of them. If you don't know how to check a set of points, then a cdi would be good, or if you want to rev over 7000. I will stick to points and not worry about fouled plugs, from a weak spark.

Be careful with the 6 cylinder head studs. I had one of these (same year) and several head studs pulled out over time.
It used to blow the head gasket and would shoot fire out the side up to the point it would quit running (usually 20 miles from home)

Why don't things ever go wrong close to home :lol3. I will keep a eye on the studs, i had a cr that would unscrew them.Cheers Peter.

I am not going down a freeway on it. Trails, dirt roads, weekends away camping that sort of thing. If i want to go on a HWY i will ride my Varadero or my Moto Guzzi.

its not a "want" to go on a highway its more i end up on one at some point :wink: usually trying to get home out of the rain in the fastest way possible :rofl

for week end play thing i would like one again i have only just picked up a 1981 DT175 for the eldest to ride :clap i am finding that he doesn't get ago on it much :evil

Funny you say that. I have a dt 125/175 that i got for the kids. I can't keep off it, had to buy the kids a kx. I think for pure fun, you just can't beat a small 2 stroke.
