Studs in lower triple clamp

I have, what I believe is, a /5 lower clamp from a triple tree.

It has studs and nuts where my early /6 version has allen bolts.

I asssume I can double nut the stud and back it out?

They don't use permanent thread locker from the factory?

The stud is pretty short and there isn't too much room to use a double nut, I didn't want to grab the threads with a vice grip out of frustration, bugger the threads and not be able to remove the stud..... :ear

Why not just use it the way it's set up with the stud and nut ?

Don't know about threadlock use but it might be a good idea to heat the area where the stud is threaded in anyway, just to help makes things easier.

If it's a /5 clamp it won't have the proper tapped 5mm holes in the bottom for the /6 steering damper adjuster rack and probably won't be relief machined in the bottom of the stem for the pinion gear on the steering damper adjuster rod.
If you're not running the damper then no biggie.

This is for the dreaded lower clamp to upper clamp conversion.....

I want to change to Allen bolts cause it looks more "elegant" than the nylok nuts

The /5 clamp actually has less holes to fill than the /6 clamp do to the steering dampner set up (I think).

I know there are people making these and that's much easier of a route but IMHO the homemade route can be made to have more of a "stock" appearance.

Not that it's stock, but less of a "stealth fighter" look to it.:D

That's a hoss of a different color then.
Having done the conversion once on a custom S I built a long time ago, Now I just buy the San Jose upper triple clamp and be done with it.
Bang for the buck, My time is worth a lot more than the cost of theirs.
There's actually a fair amount of machine work that needs to be done, and done correctly.
