'78 r100/5

Rode her for the first time today :freaky

She was an R80/7...

What I was after was the look of some of the pre-war BMW race bikes and prefer many of the /2 and /5 aesthetics. :freaky

Very nice! Not much into the black wheel thing, but I like it anyway.

I like the black on the fork lowers. How do those clip-ons and stock pegs feel on your arms and back after a while?

Beater 07-05-2012 10:01 AM

Whoa .... That's real pretty ...

Super tastefully done bike.

Jumpin' Jiminy that's a nice looking bike!

Might be obvious to smarter folks, but which parts are r100 and which are /5?

mindfulness 07-05-2012 06:53 PM

Thank you guys, for all of the kind words. This bike means a lot to me, I did a lot of the prep work and cleaning and was there for 90% of the process and my friend and I built it together (well, he mostly did it and I was helper). :beer

It's tolerable with the clip ons but my back got a little sore after my second 50 mile ride on her today. May just need to get used to the position but the stock pegs with clip ons isn't an issue so far... Arms aren't bad at all but let's just say the bike is more comfortable doing back roads than straight highway haul.

The original R80 cylinders and pistons were replaced with R100 cylinders and pistons and the heads were milled as well. The frame and engine are matched number set from a '78 R80/7. So that's the R100 part... The reason I indicate /5 is because many of the design/aesthetic features were from /5 era bikes such as the switch gear, longer front fender, side covers, tank, carbs, foot pegs front and rear, drum front hub/brake, seat and horn (that's all I can recall at the moment).

The look I favor most is of the pre-war race bikes that's where the black wheels and clip ons are coming from... All of the cosmetic stuff aside though, with 1000cc and milled heads, she moves and roars :freaky
