Two strokes in CA

I have read a few snippets around the 'ole Internet that have me wondering...

I'm keen to add a two stroke to my road going stable (wanting a T500, I think...) and need a Project.

My question is, is there a problem registering a two-stroke in crazy CA? Can a two-stroke be brought in from out of state and registered..?

May have answered my own question...

A call to CA DMV reveals any vehicle 25 years old or older is exempt from EPA / 50 state compliance.

If anyone has had a different experience, please advise before I spend any money..!

Two strokes

What if you want to bring in a two stroke in from another state, does the 25 year rule still apply

If it was 1st sold in the US as a street bike (or Enduro), it's legal. Smokem if ya got em.

BTW, don't get hung up on no titles, California is very friendly for these simple issues or not being registered and having past due fees. Let us know what you get, I'd be willing to help out if needed, I'm in Orange.

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) established emission regulations for on-highway motorcycles beginning with 1978-year models. Off-highway motorcycles must have an emission label affixed to the vehicle indicating certification by the manufacturer for on-highway use when converting to on-highway or dual registration. Registration guidelines for off-highway motorcycles converting to on-highway or dual registration require verification of the emission label.

NOTE: ATV OHVs cannot be originally registered for on-highway use or converted to on-highway registration, regardless of aftermarket conversion kits or added equipment.

Please direct questions regarding emission certification or labeling to the California Air Resources Board at 1-800-242-4450 or visit their website at www.arb.ca.gov.

I'm not finding any documentation of this "vintage" rule. That's getting really recent these days. Plates on a CR500? Probably not. The bike will still have to have been sold for road use originally, at least, and at the time have been compliant with federal on-road emissions requirements for its year of manufacture.

Smog test exemption is stalled out at 1975 model year.

Here is a reasonably priced Suzuki two-stroke that someone on ADV just brought to our attention:

http://omaha.craigslist.org/mcy/3297663666.html

I've got a T500, love it, but many people go after the two-strokes for all the things that the T500 is not: twitchy.

I think of my T500 as a lumbering beast, growling with every step, vs the flickable rng-dng-dng RDs.

Good luck with your search!
