DL650 sluggish turning question
 
1st time ever, i rode a 2006 DL650 today and was surprised at the resistance to turning at slow speeds. seemed like it didn't want to turn! nothing wrong with the bearings, just met with resistance. is this due to the "high center of gravity"?

my g/s seems so effortless in slow speed turns.

Does it have a fork brace? I didn't realize it made a difference at slow speed until a Montrose CO police motor officer and his instructor declared their DL650 a whole new bike after doing a few figure eights in a parking lot after a brace was installed. Lowering the front by raising the fork tubes 10-15mm also makes steering quicker and prevents high speed aerodynamic lift by the fairing.

Do you know which tires?

I know when I first installed a Shinko 705 front tire the steering felt quite a bit different. Worn tires of any type could have that effect, too.

So do tyres that are seriously underinflated.

If it was a 'dealer bike' - low tyres is likely.


My 06 DL certainly had a worse turning circle than my old F650, but it wasn't noticeably 'bad' in comparison, you just needed a bit more width to make a tight turn.

+1 on checking tyre pressures. But if its the OEM Bridgestones you were riding with, then it'll never feel very good, until you fit.. well, pretty much any other tyre :lol3

A full tank of gas kills handling. It is heavy.

I know on mine the handling is very sluggish because the steering stem bearings are toast. Hopefully my new ones arrive this week.

everyone gave you good ideas to check.

One more thing might be if the rear is lowered at all. It seems pretty common for people to lower the rear or take all the preload out of the rear shock and that kills the handling too.
My real bet is on underinflated tires though. Its amazing how many people don't check their tires and some shops are horrible about this too.

A well setup strom actually handles very well and drops into the turns just fine.

Something's off if there is resistance, I've never felt any. Every other used bike i go to test ride has under inflated tires that throws handling and response out the window.

Fork brace does not have anything to do with this....and yes I do recommend it...after installing you are riding a different bike...
Fuel tank is higher..maybe higher then other bikes but that also is not a problem.....so it had to be tires...

But then again I always check tires before riding...especially someone else s bike
