Question on 1970 Bultaco Matador

I have just begun work on a Mk IV Matador I have had in the back yard since 1979. Picture of frame below. (Oops, "You may not post attachments") My question is about the lower triple clamp.

When I removed it from the frame, it came away with the steering stem. So far, so good. The problem is that it can rotate about the steering stem, and that joint is a bit loose (it wobbles).

How are those parts meant to be joined together? I would have guessed they could be welded together, but maybe they were a press fit, or threaded, or ?

I am currently mystified, and any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

If the lower yoke is alloy then the stem will be a press fit, if its steel can also be press fit or may be welded.

Thanks twin shock. It is a magnetic metal, so I will investigate further. It's really loose, about 10 degrees of wobble. May need to use a fixture to insure right angle if it needs welding.

I'm guessing press fit.

You can post pictures by using a picture/file sharing host site like Photobucket. They are free and easy to use

If its 10 degrees I would suggest either properly repairing the worn or damaged part, or a used replacement. Welding it when there is that much movement, will mean distortion is almost certain.

Pick one up off ebay. They pop up every now and again. It's definitely a press fit, in wich case, welding could interfere with the inner race/bearings. Sounds like someone may have been a bit rough on riding that matador :)
