Will my 990 need Giant Loop heat shields?
Next week I'm flying to a cold, damp northern city to pick up my new-to-me 2011 990adv. It is my intention to throw my Giant Loop Coyote over the back of it and hit the road home asap. And the GPS, XM etc.
It occured to me that I have no idea if the 990 will need the Giant Loop Heat Shields. Can anyone *with experience* with this combination (I'm quite capable of guessing, assuming, using clairvoyance) that can answer this question? If I do, I need to order them and ship them to the bike right away so they're there on my arrival. Thank you. |
You'll need something to keep the bag from hitting the exhaust. GL shield is the easiest.

Easier to crush a coke can and stuff it underneath.
|
I don't
I Rode A LOT of dirt last month getting to the KTM rally and did not use one. I had no issues. Your call however.
|
Nope. I've got the Great Basin bag and if you put it on the seat itself the bag rests on the rear panels.
|
As mentioned, if you put it where the passenger sits you are good to go. If you ride with a passenger you will most likely need them. Personally I like the coke can idea as I am not fond of clamping stuff to my exhaust.

Well here is what happened to my side panel when I didn't have a shield on my GL

Did a job on the bag, too. |
Small problem...just buy some heat shields and enjoy the ride without drama !

Nope. Ridden many thousands of miles with a coyote combined with a duffle on lots of dirt and pavement. Coyote runs flatter then the great basin. Only suggestion is to throw some tape on the side panels if you do not want to scratch them. This is a great setup on the katoom:deal

I am from South Africa, bought 990R in Feb2012 in Capetown, flew down with only Giant Loop great basin, did long way round back home, mostly dirt roads, witout a pillion, 3000km+
I will never fit the GL with out its own shileds |
I ran with no heat shields for a few years and had no problems. Then I stuffed an item haphazardly into my GL and it shifted the load just enough to toast the corner of the bag.
USE THE HEAT SHIELDS!! |
