Mounting a tool box
 

New to the forum, thanks for all the helpful information the regulars post here. I am thinking about mounting a tool box behind my license plate on my '12, 1200GS. I got the idea on the forum and have seen a couple of pictures here however the search engine makes it difficult to find more info. I have the standard BMW luggage so there is not really enough room to mount anything behind the luggage (think about this when buying the BMW luggage!)
I was looking at these boxes http://www.pelicancases.com/1150-p/1150.htm.
Any feedback would be appreciated, it looks pretty easy to do but not sure if there is a better option, if box is a good size, if there are problems others have experienced etc.

Yea, already checked those out, not enough room behind the standard Vario Luggage mounts for any of those as far as I can tell.

I know some are not what you wanted but may get you going in right direction. I will say the pelican on the inside of GSA cases is a pain in the butt to get at. Nice and out of the way mind you but not very easy access. Tubes are accessible all the time. I may put my tubes back on in the spring.
My 2 cents anyway.

Here's how I did mine on the 1150. Used for a first aid kit. Gotta like Pelican, indestructible and water/dust proof.

After seeing these past post i will be moving my pelican in the spring!!

If you go solo, and don't have the GSA luggage mounts (I have Micatechs, so no frames), you can always do something like this...it's mine, I have it mounted on a pillion deck plate:

The pelican behind the plate is excactly what I had in mind. Ater using it how do you like this type of mount, is there anything you would suggest? Can you fit a decent tool kit in it? Is that the "small" 1150 pelican?

A couple Qs:
- I see you have the pelican 1120 on the side...it the back unit also the 1120?

- If you fill that up with tools, does the extra weight move that back fender/attachment point much?

I think mine is the 1150. It's the perfect place for something light like a first aid kit. If you're using it for a tool kit, with more weight, I would brace it from behind just so it doesn't shake back and forth and break loose of the fender. I'm going to brace mine now that I've changed luggage and have a side to side brace behind it now.
Here's the interior dimensions of the 1150, 8.18" x 5.68" x 3.62".
The only concerns I would have about using it for tools is when you open it, will they all fall out? Also, if they are wet at all when you put them away, they might rust bad being a waterproof box.
Worst case scenario, you use it for something else.
