Get Your Kicks On Route 66

Route 66 is a classic American road trip that riders from around the world undertake every year on street and dual purpose bikes. This page is dedicated to preparing riders for a successful and fun trip. Incepted in 1926, Route 66 extends from Chicago, IL. to Santa Monica, CA. There is much to see across the eight Route 66 states and lots of friendly folks to visit with.

This is the Offical Route 66 post. Help others get ready for a trip down "The Mother Road". Ask a planning question or leave information for others here.

Suggestions - When planning for a Route 66 road trip there are a few resources that every rider should have in their possession.

The first item should be a book that can be referred to when electronic resources aren't available. The most used book is the Route 66 EZ Guide by Jerry McClanahan. This book provides complete turn by turn directions, illustrations, points of interest and is updated routinely.

The second item for GPS is the Route 66 Attractions Guide with Ready2Go Tours. This item is updated continuously and works on the Garmin Zumo model line. It includes complete turn by turn directions, points of interest, commentary and pictures.

A well paced ride along Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica should be around 14 days while an ideal time frame is 21 days. With these two items, riders will be able to see everything on Route 66.

The National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program has a website that has information and links for folks who whis to have a jumping off point to start at. Lots of information here and the program is dedicated to the preservation of Route 66.

The National Historic Route 66 Federation is the worldwide, non-profit organization dedicated to directing the public's attention to the importance of U.S. Highway Route 66 in America's cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize the economies of communities along the entire 2,400-mile stretch of road.

Riders preparing for a summer Route 66 tour should ensure they have their bikes and maps in order.

Best times for travel are mid May - June and September - October.

For those that have travelled Route 66 before, be sure to look at Dirt 66. All of the fun of Route 66 with a dual sport and off road twist.

For proper pacing, the ride should be 16-21 days long.

Hello Zoodio,

Yes, June is one of the best months to ride Route 66. The drive from Calgary will be nice too.

All the maps and planning information you need will be within the two items listed here on this post.

Have a great ride and post any questions or needs.

The weather is starting to clear and the riding is good. Street and Dirt 66 are in place and the season has started. Hogs and big bikes are working eastbound and westbound. Dirt 66 should be entirely dry around the second week of April. Jerry Mc Clanahan has updated his Route 66 EZ Guide to the 3rd edition. We have updated our software to Rev 4.0 as well.

Have a good ride. Contact if you need assistance.
