Anza Borrego & Breadshaw Trail - December 27-30, 2012

Since almost everyone was riding as the year 2012 comes to an end, we decided to have a little ride of our own. Most of LA gang headed down to Baja, a great ride but a little to far.
First, I and Rider914 decided to ride north of Death Valley, Hot Springs and up. But m1jeep pointed out that it was snowy and really cold in DV so we decided to south, to Anza Borrego and much anticipated historic Breadshaw Trail. Our little 2 men ride soon became a 5 men journey. I, Rider914, m1jeep, perro from hell and kkug.

Friday morning was cold. :vardy But those yellow leaves matched perfect with KTM Orange.

I met m1jeep at Yorba Linda and headed east to meet Rider914 at Hemet.

After a short pavement we hit dirt. Good, damp dirt. No dust, great traction. We were headed to Butterfield Ranch CG.

Matt had his 950 with a new soft luggage set up.

Did I mentioned it was cold??? Rich ATGATT.

Long way to go.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3194-XL.jpg

Some nice back-country roads

Indian Flats Campground. Matt said every time he was there, the gate was closed. So when we see the gate open, we headed down the road to take a look at it. It was a very nice, quiet and clean campground.

Next stop: Borrego Springs for lunch.

After lunch some more back-country & sand to Butterfield Ranch CG.

Just before we reached CG, I had a flat on my front and went down. :lol3 I knew something was wrong for a while and stand up to see the tire. Right that moment, I had to turn left on a sandy section and went down (#1). Luckily I was getting good at changing flats and it didn't take long. We were back in the camp before dark. Meanwhile Matt got a good spot for our tents and some firewood. He also bought a 6 pack for the night.
The weather was as clean as it gets, millions of stars and a big full moon. Couple hours ago Diego text me asking to set up a ride for the weekend and when I told him we were already in Anza Borrego he decided to ride in dark and freezing cold to meet us at Butterfield. He made it to the CG around 10:30pm.

Hey Isaac. It was a good weekend in deed. Wait for Breadshaw Trail. You have to do it someday.

Day 2

Next morning we were planning to leave camp by 9am, latest. We ended up doing it after 11:00. :huh First we overslept. Than my "technologically advanced" Shorai battery died. :cry I know I know, it takes a while for it to warm up, blah blah blah. But this time it just didn't. So we had to get a jumper cable from the camp host. At that point I was trying to decide if I should go back home or keep riding. And I kept riding...

Diego joined us at the CG, late night. We had a long way to go on dirt, Arroyo Tapiado, Diablo Dropoff and famous FIsh Creek Wash...

http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3242-XL.jpg

Honestly I thought Fish Creek would be much sandier but after Arroyo Tapiado I didn't feel Fish Creek has any sand at all... :D
Than came to Diablo Dropoff.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3243-XL.jpg

Matt and I took an "easier" way down just around the corner. It was deep sand that helped us to go down slowly. Rich and Diego tried the real Diablo.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3244-XL.jpg

It was whoopy and sandy. Oh, and steep as well. All the camping gear on the back made it even harder to stand up and slow the bike down.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3245-XL.jpg

http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3246-XL.jpg

But finally we made it all down in one piece.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3248-XL.jpg

Then came those big boulders:

http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3257-XL.jpg

http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3260-XL.jpg

Kind of Golar steps in DV

Then we rode some canyon
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3274-XL.jpg

We had a late lunch at Mecca right before we hit Breadshaw Trail from west. Sun was going down fast and we wanted to find a good spot for camping. Luckily the weather was beautiful and no rain was coming.

http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3282-XL.jpg

You can't really see it in this picture (thanks to my point&shoot camera) but there was a perfect full moon and the sky was crystal clear, at least for a while.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3297-XL.jpg

We definetely need a full SLR for camp pictures. We could have captured amazing pictures that night.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MGP3298-XL.jpg

I had a little weird moment at Ocotillo Weels. We were trying to meet Ken and looking around for him. Then we decided to take off and look for him at a local diner. Everybody took off and I was the last, riding on the side of the road. A dune buggy past me and slowed down. I thought he was gonna make a left turn like all other off road bikes and buggies to the sand dunes and I accelerated towards his right to pass him. But instead he made a right turn ON me and I went down (#2). I have a bad shoulder for a long time and it popped out again but went back in. It hurt and still hurting a lot... :cry I hate going down on pavement...

As always all the pictures are on my SmugMug.

Day 3 to come...

eaglescan 01-04-2013 06:28 PM

I was in B.S. in Nov. and noticed remains of a fire up to Ranchita. Did you ride the Grapevine cyn? if so, was the burn there too? Nice job getting down diablo drop off. waiting for more on the bradshaw, we spent a few hours lost in there, on the north side, finally popped out at the 10 for ice cream.

Hi Guys --When Matt rings me up for a ride I just can,t pass it up. But I decided to stay in the comfort of my warm house till Sat morn. I made it to Ocotillo Wells around noon thinking I was going to be late . But the crew was nowhere to be found. I killed some time and then I saw them coming down the road. I led them across the SVRA to Salton City. What a zoo. Thousands of Toyboxes and Toys everywhere, We were heading to the Bradshaw Trail and I knew it was going to be nice and quiet.

We stoped in Meca to get supplies.

Looked like a nice ride. Does the Bradshaw trail go all the way to The River?

It comes out near Palo Verde--Then have to go about 3 miles and the you can cross the river.

So yes it does.

traveltoad 01-05-2013 08:49 PM

Diablo drop off is not much fun in a truck either!

Looks like you had a fun and warmer trip than DV would have been... but we had soooo much extra food. :eek1

Day 3

Let me finish my RR before I got lazier...

It was a dark night until full moon showed his face. Thanks to Ken we found this primitive spot next to a big rock to protect us from winds.
http://fyyff.smugmug.com/Motorcycles...MG_4131-XL.jpg

Night wasn't that cold. As a matter of fact it drizzled a bit. But nothing serious. Morning was cold...

Diego and Rich bailed out before Palo Verde and headed home. Ken, Matt and I made it all the way and had lunch around afternoon. After that, Ken headed back home and Matt and I decided to take Breadshaw back as much as we can because rain clouds were coming our way. We made it back all the way to Gas Line Road (over half way from Palo Verde) at high speed and no stops, trying to beat the rain. However rain was already waiting for us and we cut to 10 Fwy. Our original plan was staying one more night but I hate packing my tent and camping gear under rain. So we decided to ride back home. I made it home around 7:30 Sunday night. Somewhere along the Gas Line Road we were hauling a.. to get to 10 Fwy. There was a section with deep sand and there were couple parked RV's and some quads around. I was following Matt but didn't pay attention to him when he stopped to see what's going on with quads. I was just looking around and slam on the breaks as soon as I see him. Of course couldn't stop and trying to avoid rear ending him, I highsided, flew in the air and landed next to Matt some 6-7 feet away from my bike. :) (#3) But it didn't hurt at all. :D
I am glad we finally rode Breadshaw Trail. It wasn't technical or hard even on loaded big bikes. Just couple rocky sections. I was expecting more traffic (truck or bikes) but the were none. Maybe we got lucky.
Thanks Matt and Ken to show us around. I hope to do this ride again.
As always all the pictures are on my SmugMug.
