Mexico March 2013

I'm new to posting, but I've been reading and enjoying ADV forums for some time.
I like the trip reports and hope my future trip report will be equally entertaining and informative.

Here goes...
Leaving South Texas March 1.
Riding solo to meet a friend in Merida, Yucatan, MX.
We'll hang out on the North Coast of Yucatan for 4 or 5 days. See a few pyramids, Snap a few pics, etc.
Then I'll get back on the bike and return to the states, the more scenic way. :nod
Returning South Texas March 21-ish.

It'd be groovy to see other inmates along the ride.
I only do paper maps and usually have a general plan for a particular day's ride....

When I figure out how to upload a small jpg, I'll display the route.

If your route is taking you through Veracruz I can send you a ride guide.

daBum 02-11-2013 11:34 AM

Yes, I am headed through Veracruz, and a ride guide would be very cool, thanks!

Here's the route:

Why out 'n back on the Yucatán?

You're "right there" so drop into Chiapas and visit Palenque, San Cristóbal, etc.

If you want to deviate a little, I should be home during your trip, drop me a line. I'm in Toluca, in the mountains just west of Mexico City.

I also used to live in Merida if you have any questions about that.

MikeMike 02-11-2013 11:59 AM

Send me a PM with your email address and I will attach the PDF in the response.

pax maac - Thanks!
I'll examine my return trip before I leave Yucatan - that western deviation might be possible.

In and out in south Tx?

Is there a reason to go in and out down by Brownsville?
If you are from south Az why not enjoy more of Mexico on your way down.

RW66 - Yes, at that time my base of operations will be central Texas.

getting ready

I thought I'd try to post a few bike preparation pictures, even tho they're kinda lame.
I know, I know, too many bike pics, but the ride report photos will emphasize all the fantastic scenery!

I think I have most of my gear ready, but I have to figure out how to pack efficiently.
I just threw a few things in my giant aluminum bins and did a quick over-nighter in our (Tucson's) back yard.

This is my first time traveling with the ginormous aluminum luggage and handy tank and tail bags.

old setup:

I really like the tank bag, it's the Touratech day-trip-thingee, I needed the side straps for yaw stability because my camera and lenses weigh a lot.
It is a bit intrusive whilst standing up, but it doesn't shift sideways very much. (I do quite a bit of off-road with this beasty)
The tail bag is the Wolfman Peak. It seems to be the right size for my quick-accessible stuff.

This bike is a bit heavy when she's fully loaded so poco loco throttle action and closed eyes on gnarly hills seems to do OK.

My mobile house colors almost match the bike, I didn't plan it that way, but the chicks dig it.

Then I rode back into town with the music playing, and had a few big 'hits' with the bike. Suspension still OK.
I didn't re-dent my front Buchanan/Sun rim, I already dented it from her first dirt break-in ride. :doh
Also, got some air a few times - it wasn't my fault - Metallica was playing.
The Touratech windshield extender thingee kept falling off. I will need that gizmo in Texas when I head south to Brownsville - that S 30 headwind I'll have!

So, I'm waiting for my Vehicle Permit (this week I think) and I'll be crossing the border next week.

I get inspired when I read others' journeys, and lately one in particular - RoninMoto's journey:
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=781893 Wow!

I'm gonna have fun, and take lots of groovy pics! Right on!

Nice that they dig it, though you might find a threesome a little cramped unless you are partying with dwarfs.
