Final Drive Death

How much notice did you get before your drive failed?

Place a spot on the poll for, "It hasn't happened yet but it's in the back of my mind". I can then join in the non-fun. BTW, I prefer Vital Signs off the album.

57K miles no rear drive problems. Biggest problem (besides $$$$$servicing and low mileage warranty) has been a relay that didn't leave me stranded.

No problem yet.

Cheep insurance,

If you do any creek crossings, always check for water in the final drive, and keep a bottle of gear oil with you.

I rode bike for about 1500 miles on a rough crown bearing. After disassembly, I found one pitted ball and a pitted race. The seals and gears were in such good shape (@42,000 mi) that the only thing I replaced was the bearing (about $110). Total time for replacement: about 3 hours. Those are FD failures we can handle!

I'm always on the lookout for the roughness. No problems yet in ~56k miles.

Input shaft seal leakage at 30k. Just noticed oil in the swingarm at the rear boot. Upon further inspection, the pinion bearing was going south. Swapped drives.

My other oilhead has 47k on it, and the rear drive is going strong.

:dunno

71K on my old RS with no problems.

The PO of my GS replaced the FD prior to my purchase, but I have no details.

Mine was replaced at about 5000 miles. An SUV plowing into the back of it might have had something to do with that, though :D

No problems whatsoever after 15000 miles on the second one.

Trailace 07-11-2005 08:38 PM

No problem yet. 93,000 Miles

86,500 on a 02 1150 and no problems... still rockin strong..

Three R-bikes and no failure.

What's this drive final failure all about, Alfie? :deal

2003 ADV, never had any problem with the drive - up to now.

Noticed a resonant 'thrumming' throught the handlebars for a couple of hundred miles. This disappeared and then I started getting weird feelings from the rear wheel (not unlike a puncture). Eventually, some 30 miles later (I was in the middle of nowhere and had to reach civilisation) the rear wheel started moving laterally - locking momentarily on occasion (I was doing <10mph by now). I eventually reached a town , put the bike on the side stand and...

Took the wheel off back at Jorge's place to find...

The wheel had moved about sufficiently to gouge metal out of the rear disc and caliper carrier (hence the intermittent lock-ups).
