How to make the BMW F 800 GS lighter?
 
Hi fellow riders,

I just ordered a new 2013 BMW F 800 GS with lots of adjustments, like TT stuff to protect and carry. This will add some more weight to the already quite heavy bike. So I am looking for ways to make it lighter. An example would be the exhaust pipe, which brings about 2.5k.

Are there other significant ways to reduce weight (of my bike, of course :1drink)?

Exhaust and battery will shed some weight but is it worth the $$$. It's about like the difference between a full and 1/2 tank of fuel! GH

There was a similar thread a few months ago about the same thing.... Some of the suggestions were...

-Lighter exhaust/remove cat

-Cut off passenger pegs

-Remove one brake caliper/rotor up front

-Replace metal pieces with carbon fiber

- Less fuel

-Lighter wheels

-New battery

.....

I'ts a heavy bike, not much room to drop a ton of weight. And if you truly want to, it will cost a lot of $$$$$

You could go as far as carbon fiber tank, swing arm, wheels, etc... much like sport bikes do, but that is more than the cost of the bike.

New suspension! You will not shed weight any where on the bike that is worth while, but getting a good suspension will make it much easier to manage!

That's my goal. I figure I should be able to lose enough weight to offset all the farkles I put on. That's why I got a Bowflex :evil

It is cheaper to buy a lighter bike than to buy a heavy bike and lighten it up. The 800 carries it weight well and feels lighter than it is. Maybe you should ride it for a while and then decide what farkles you need. Everyone has their favorites, but they might not be yours with the way you ride and places you go.

You could fill the tires with helium, but then it is hard to keep the rubber side down.:rofl

Get yourself a "Sponsor" who will deny you access to the Touratec catalogue or any others that may cause you to "fall off the wagon" and add protection weight after spending 2 Grand to make it lighter!

Ive cut close to 10lbs off my bike, but them put another 25lbs on, TT tank, Skid plate, Rear Rack, Side Racks, Tools...... so on and so forth.

Buying a lighter bike in the first place is the best revenge,adding a pile of parts then cutting pieces off the bike is one way to do things.

Maybe hack one cylinder off? Cut it right down the middle then get a machinist to make it into a real single cylinder.

All just thoughts.

Per a previous comment. Getting your suspension dialed in, while not pulling weight off, will make your bike "FEEL" about 50 bounds lighter.

I think there is another one as well with twin headlights? Or was that yours before? Not sure.

Do you know if there is a guide or thread of this conversion being done somewhere? Would be an interesting read, I wonder how hard it is to relocate the instrument cluster and get it all working.
