Last 2 weeks of April - Where to Go?
All right, I took two weeks off 20APR - 5May-ish. I live in San Diego. I speak NO spanish, so don't want to go to Baja, but other than that, I'm flexible to go just about anywhere.
I planned on going to Colorado, but now I'm worried about not being able to do the cool mountain trails (big bike stuff, KLR650) because of snow/ice. Actually worried about that being a problem just about anywhere out west here. Am I worried about nothing?
I'm tempted to just say screw it and go, and see where I can get to. But I don't want to end up in a snowstorm. Any advice?
Crap, meant to post this in Americas - if someone moves it there, that'd be great, thanks.
It hasn't been a huge snow year, so you might be OK with eastern Sierra travel. There are some cool ghost towns between Bishop and Reno, with lots of 4X4 trails to explore. You should be able to get weather reports from people you meet, newspapers, or a smart phone. I like the NOAA weather graphs, because they give hourly everything (wind, chance of precip, sky cover...).
The Grand Canyon would also be a great trip this time of year, as would southern Utah and Colorado. Highway 1 would also be good, since the fog hasn't become thick yet.
For a mello trip without much off road, you could do Highway 49 along the western Sierra. Most of the dirt trails (US National Forest) are still closed. Lots of towns with gold rush history, though.
That sounds reasonable - maybe something like:
Random places in Utah (maybe Utah BDR if I can get through the passes)
Stay out of Colo for the most part unless weather is looking good. I did spend a bunch of time last July riding around CA/Oregon/WA, so interested in staying further East this time (but I hate snow!)
Yosemite is nice, but it will take 2 days out of your trip, and still has some snow. The rest of your list will take you to some awesome riding.
