question about the fuel filters on 990
 
As many of you know already the fuel filters on the 990 are a constant problem. Personally I have to change mine every 30,000 km. The only problem I have now is that I'm in Peru and they're hard to find. In my opinion the cylindrical filter is the one failing from all the heat and bad gas too. Now what I was thinking to do just as a temporary solution is to remove it completely till I find one or replace it with a different one from a different bike ( if there's one that fits). Any of you know of a fuel filter from mostly Japanese bikes that will fit the 990.

When I did my research, I didn't find anything that fits.
 
So I have no solution for you. I ended up ordering a batch from China.

I'd try to clean both the filters by spraying with carb cleaner.
You could also try to disassemble the filter from it's metal caps
and find another paper fuel filter and cut it up to fit into the metal caps.
Someone here on the OC has done a thread on doing this.

If you decide to delete the paper filter you might want to install an
external fuel filter.

My last hope is KTM Lima tomorrow if not carb cleaner it is....thanks for the advice really good idea.

I recently received Gefr's filter pack and it looks great.
Even got the O-ring with it and it came in the cutest little box covered with Greek postal stamps :D

The sock filter looks like its made from recycled granny pantys but I bet it works just as well as the original ones Or better as there is a large plastic framework inside.

I'd recommend it!

As a more tem solution, cleaning with carb cleaner or as a dangerous solution, removing it and installing one external of the tank could work as well. I just fear you lose some pressure with an out of tank filter.

I'm not gonna put anything outside the tank is just a temporary solution till I'll find some...worst case I'll clean the bag filter with carb cleaner and remove the cylindrical one.

+1 on Gefr's fuel filter pack, cheaper and just as good as the original...

I would hate to lose the main (cylindrical) filter as the possible contamination to the injectors. Getting some micro junk in the injector nozzle or pintle valve would be not so good in my opinion. I'm thinking of tearing out the old filter material and trying to replace it with some new filtration medium. I'm just curious about whether there is a tight enough fit in there to keep the caps from dislodging or creating another issue. I'm sure there's some kind of adhesive used for the paper element where it's attached to the caps, but what is it. I'm in need of filters (or a possible pump) also here in Guatemala, dealership doesn't have them.

Also, how would having an external fuel filter lower fuel pressure?? It has to go through the filter regardless of where it's at. It would have a few more inches to travel, but as far as pressure I don't think it would lower it. Anyone with experience with this? I'm willing to try it as a solution for my issues if none others present themselves. Although I guess I could have a friend ship some to me, but at a cost :(

External fuel filters.
 
The difference with installing an external fuel filter is this: The pump pressurizes fuel at 3,5bar and then passes through the external filter and looses some pressure; in the OEM situation, fuel is pressurized through the filter and then regulated to 3,5bar and continues towards fuel injectors. However I read of a person that is running this setup and is quite happy with it. I prefer clean solutions.

Worst case,, NAPA sells every fuel strainer from just about every vehicle made and has a book with pictures.. :)

I know that after the cylindrical filter goes in my opinion it's worse having it than not, as it disintegrates itself and than u end up with lots of stuff in your injectors.....Anyway I found filters in Lima...KTM Lima is huge and they have a lots of stuff including tires.
