Play in drive shaft U joint
Hi all

I've got a couple of drive shafts for the 90S that I'm putting together but I suspect they're both stuffed.
How much, if any, side to side play is acceptable in the U joint? One has far more play than the other but... I dunno.

The universal joint itself should have zero play.

Munich sell the serviceable universals as a part, who would be able to install that?

I replaced my uni joint about 15 years ago with a Hardy Spicer part.
I can't remember the part number, and my bike is a 81 R100 RS so a different part to yours no doubt.
Easy to cross reference once you have measured cap diametre and cross dimension.

Is your uni peened in place?
I used a steel washer over each cap. The washer was a perfect fit diametre, and also sat perfectly flush with the outside of the yokes, so centreing the new uni was easy.

Two quick hits of mig per washer.
That was a lot of years, and abuse ago.

This would be great tip if you could remember the number of the part you used 109.

HPMGuy can replace u-joints with circlipped replaceable ones... he did on the drive shaft for my R80G/S

It may be written somewhere in my BMW 27 volume workshop manual. (sorta fell apart over the years, the manuals more rooted than the bike)

But regardless of what I may or may not have written, as soon as your uni is on the bench in front of you, you will have your sizes and that is as good as a part number.
Just a standard universal joint. Even comes with a grease nipple but I think I took mine out. Sure as hell never greased it!
Don't even need to take the uni out of the shaft to measure and could be done in the bike prolly.

Oh yeah, there's a little peening to help keep the lid on things.
Edit, that's 100,000 k + repair.
