Is 2005 1200GS (55k miles) worth $9.9K

Hi.

I'm looking at getting a used 1200 GS. I found a 2005 with 55k miles for $9900. It has Jesse bags and looks well cared for (garaged, etc.).

Is this a good deal? The miles seem high. It's being sold by second owner -- they don't know if the recalls (3 in 2005) have been performed.

10k is pretty much my price point, but I could be talked into a little more. Is there any reason to get a later year with less miles for a bit more (like 11-12k)

Thanks!
Matt

I just sold an '09 without bags and 34k miles for $11k. That price is stupid high. A friend just bought an '07 without bags with 42k for $9k.

Also depends on where you live.
Bikes go for drastically different prices around the country.

CA seems to always be at least 1k if not 1.5k higher for a GS/GSA.

Realize the 05 was the first year of the 1200 series. It had the stupid-ass servo brakes, and also had each and every problem that the 1200s series is known for. I wouldn't buy one. But if I had to, I wouldn't go mre than $7K for an 05 with 55K miles. Look around on this site. You can find an 08/09 with low miles for $10K-ish. Much better deal. Much better bike.

Just sold my 2006 R1200GS for $7900 in CA with 3 Vario bags, ABS HID lights, Bad Boy Horn, Crash Bars, Hammerhead Gear Change and a lot more upgrades. This price is high for a 2005 + high miles.

Fair Price : Go to Kelly Blue Book site for the year of the bike, take the retail price $9219 minus the trade in price $6440 divide the difference $2770 by 2 = 1385 add this amount $1385 to the trade in price $6440 +$1385 and you have a middle of the road price.=$7825 fair price to work from ( just my equation to get in a ball park fair private person price to work from and this is a California price.)
It is way below the price of this bike and a high milage bike should be less

If you are set on Jesse'd make an adjustment up for the value of these and ABS.

This year model 2005 & 2006 as noted, has the Servo brake assist, if this goes out it is around $2500 repair, for the asking price you should be around a 2008 at least.

I bought a bright Red 2010 R1200GS from a dealer for $12500 19000 miles.

Hold on and shop for a good deal.

I have a 2005 with 55,000 miles and Jesse bags, zero problems and love the servo brakes. You will find that most of the people that knock the servos have never owned them. I would think that a fair price if I were to sell mine would be between $8,000 - $8,500.

I would concur with okietom. But at that price I have a couples goodies I'd pull off and flea market.

Just paid $8k for what sounds like the same bike. 2005 R1200GS W/ 55k mi. vario luggage all the cases and complete service records. Inspected bike, went for long test ride and appeared to be never used off road. No dust under the hood :)

With all due respect to Jim (and other 2005-6 doubters), these early bikes either had problems early, or they didn't. My 2005, 29K miles, has been rock solid reliable and easy to live with. Have done a total of 2 "full brake services" for about $200 each at the dealer (this spring and 4 years before). That is it for anything other than routine oil, filter, tranny fluid, and one set of rear pads. NO ISSUES otherwise. Did a battery last year because I felt guilty that it lasted that long!

I would price my perfect, 3 Varios bike with Rick Mayer saddle, and lots of farkles at $9K at least. Brand new Michelin PR3 Trails, and all service current. Also, "no dirt under (or on top) of the hood". :evil

It's worth it if you pay that much for it, this time of year someone might.

This is absolutely the wrong place to ask that question. IMO, ask what to look for as far as things that go bad, check for some comparable prices, then ask yourself if that is the bike you want. Seen this type of thread on all kinds of forums, if it is your bike you think you are giving it away. If it is someone else is selling it, they want want way too much.
