Jacks Journey: Traveling the west

This will be my first stab at a ride report, I had high hopes of trying to do this from the road but....I have no idea how you guys manage that.
Anyway, I'm Brian
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0523-S.jpg
and I've been riding with Jack
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...11210912-S.jpg
for the past few years and the past couple bikes.
Jack and I have been around Oregon quite a bit
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/photos/i...-sjJBKCD-S.jpg
And the coast from the NoCal Redwoods
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/photos/i...-bNXk3LG-S.jpg
To the San Juans
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Other/Ca...edited-1-S.jpg

In my younger days I traveled around the world, had myself a high old time. But in 30+ years of marriage/ raising kids/ working somehow I lost the adventure urge. Well, my last kid is grown, my last wife is gone, and I have enough time and money to play now that I'm in my 50's. So the past few years the road trips have been getting longer, and further.
So Jack and I are off to San Diego and the California coast via central Oregon, central Nevada, SW Utah, and Arizona.

bkg123 05-11-2013 08:22 AM

I'm Riding a Super Tenere on my trip. This is my second year on this bike and it has been absolutely fantastic. She's a pack mule.

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Other/Ca...09015167-M.jpg

The Trax boxes are on their third bike, and work great, They were loaded to about 30lbs each on this trip. The big Givi top box is new, and has worked very well. I keep the Givi empty most the time. It's big enough to throw in my tankbag and helmet when I take off from the bike for any length of time, and makes a gret campsite table.
I put on K60's for this trip since I planned on hitting some dirt roads on the journey. They handled the gravel/dirt really well. Sand....not so much and pea gravel was...well...never any fun. On the tight paved twistys, the held great.

I rolled out of Portland on April 19th taking hwy 26 over Mt Hood and headed for LaPine Or. and Hwy 31 down to 395.
It was dumping pretty good in the NorthWethttp://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0506-M.jpg
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0502-S.jpg
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0503-S.jpg

But once I got to the other side of the Cascades thing started to dry out nicely.
I stopped off at the Crooked river to dry out and change clothes.
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0454-M.jpg

You might spot the eagle that was hunting down in the canyon, he's on the left side of the canyon, about 1/3 up the photo.
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0459-M.jpg

I wanted to bring my SLR on this trip for pictures but it was was bigger then I wanted to carry, so I'm using my trusty old Canon G11 and the iPhone.

bkg123 05-11-2013 08:57 AM

I kind of hauled ass through Redmond and Bend, I wanted to get to unfamiliar territory. My first stop would be Hole in the ground. A big volcanic crater. Central Oregon is covered with these things. Locals told me that theres two craters, Big hole and hole in the ground. Big hole I guess is pretty overgrown with trees and brush, but hole in the ground is pretty cool looking
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0463-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0461-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0464-M.jpg

The wind was incredible through this area, I was a little nervous standing near the ledge, the gusts were crazy.
And hole is the only place where I managed to drop the bike.....Doh
No pictures of that. Funny thing, even when your out in the middle of nowhere, no people within miles, if you do something stupid, you still look around to see who saw it!

Next I'm off to Fort Rock.

bkg123 05-11-2013 10:18 AM

According to Wikipedia, this is a dry lakebed. A volcano erupted when it was still a lake. The molten rock solidified when it hit the lake bottom mud and created this stone ring. The lake dried out and the mud all washed away over time leaving this stone ring that resembles the walls of a fort thus 'Fort Rock'

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0468-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0467-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0466-M.jpg

An old buddy of mine was working at a power substation out here, and I was going to meet him for lunch but the wind was howling so much he never heard his phone ring so I missed out meeting up with him.
Now at this point, I was going to cut off at Summer lake down E Bay Rd and onto some forestry roads and come out near the Cali border, but a local told me there was still about 6 ft of snow up there, so I stuck to the hiway.
It was still a mighty pretty ride down through Central Oregon.

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0469-M.jpg

And I ended up in Lakeview Or. my first night.

young1 05-11-2013 12:55 PM

Nice photos, thank you

cleanair 05-11-2013 04:42 PM

great start to your RR

bkg123 05-11-2013 06:24 PM

The only thing of note in lakeview was that about 1/4 mile from the hotel some bonehead completly crossed over the center line into my lane on a corner, but my bonehead detector was working and I had a feeling I should be moving toward the shoulder. He was looking down as if he had some sort of electronic messaging device in his lap...but that would never happen would it?

Anyway, a good night sleep, and 21deg temps the next morning and we were on our way again.

A little frost...

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0513-M.jpg

And Jack is already looking like a traveler

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0514-M.jpg

Now the real adventure begins. I'm out of my home territory. Headed for California.
Here I discovered a minor self inflicted GPS glitch. I loaded a bunch of different routes on the Garmin thinking I'd pick whichever road looked promising at the time. Well, you can have TOO Many routes on these baby's. Which I did. So California CR9 cuts across some mountains east from Hwy 395 and takes you over to CR1. Well CR11 does too, but not until the snow melts. I did NOT take this into account. But I had a lovely time lost in some California Mts for a few hours.
I went from this

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0486-M.jpg

To this

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0490-M.jpg

to this

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0492-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0491-M.jpg

And finally back out again

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0496-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0494-M.jpg

And now I found CR9, which was incredible. Its Northern California's version of Moki Dugway I think....but shhhh, dont tell anyone. Its a good secret to keep. I wish I had some decent pictures of it but I really didnt want to stop anywhere on the twisty parts. But look up CR9 on google. Its a twisty switchbacky little bastard. Very fun. Heres a few shots up there.

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0513-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0508-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0520-M.jpg

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0521-M.jpg

Headed towards Surprise Valley.

Redwoods.....

I've never seen those redwoods, but plan to make the 1,000 mile out of the way trip just for those......I hope they're worth the extra miles (in a cage of all things!) Thanks for your RR.....

Theres more redwoods coming up. And they are worth the trip. Glad to share the ride. I borrowed from a lot of other ride reports preparing for this trip. Its kind of a pay it forward arrangement we have here. Your ride helps my ride, my ride helps the next guys ride.

waylongway 05-11-2013 10:05 PM

I'm in! Done the Lassen trail a few times myself..Roll on!! :lurk

bkg123 05-12-2013 04:58 AM

What really impressed me on this trip was the amount of open empty space out here still. Mile after mile after mile of mountain, desert, mountain, desert. I headed south from the surprise valley down into Nevada. I made it as far as Fernley Nv on the 20th. I need to work on my timing or something on future trips. I dont like being in big towns or cities, and really dislike freeways but I seemed to end up in one at the end of the day more then I cared for. I need to work on being a long way out of town toward evening.

Stop earlier, or ride later I guess. Anyway, I ended up in Fernley at an RV park. Had a nice grassy patch under a tree. No pics of that camp. I was wiped out, and had an early start the next morning.

bkg123 05-12-2013 05:21 AM

I rolled out of Fernley and headed SE on Hwy 50 to Hwy 361. Nv. has some nice 2 lane state and county roads.
http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0531-M.jpg

Saw these enormous sand dunes. These were huge. They had a recreational area out there for the quads to play at

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0528-M.jpg

I was headed toward a road I had spotted called the Gabbs pole road. Turned out to be about 50-60 miles of straight gravel. What was so cool about this road was I saw not another car on the whole road. This was my longest solitary stretch on the trip. Just me and cattle.

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0535-M.jpg

And at the other end I found this.
Im pretty sure this is one of those solar plants where the array of mirrors focus sunlight on the top of the tower to generate steam. This thing was huge. Look at the cranes scattered around it, they look tiny.

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...IMG_0538-M.jpg

And more of Nevada

And I spent the night in Caliente Nv.

Tomorrow I was meeting up with old friends I hadn't seen in 13 years. Riding through Zion Park. WooHoo.

acejones 05-12-2013 06:45 AM

Pretty good stuff ! Keep it coming.

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...15313875-M.jpg

It seemed to me that when I crossed over into Utah I saw a difference. The towns were nicer, the country was more dramatic, the people were a bit friendlier. Not looking to piss off any Navadians(?) but Utah is a damn nice place. I decided that Im making a trip just for Utah in the future.
Anyway, I was a lot closer to Hurricane (where I was meeting friends) then I thought, so I made the 2-3 hour ride last 8 instead.

I stopeed for coffee

http://bglad123.smugmug.com/Motorcyc...15322989-M.jpg

Zion National Park
We got there for the season opener, so admission and busses were free. Score!
Zion is a very small park, you can ride through the whole thing in less then an hour I'd guess, but you can't take your personal vehicle up into Zion canyon. You have to take the shuttle, but I decided this is really a great way to do it. You can get off any shuttle and catch another any time they stop, and one goes by about every 10 minutes so its real convenient.
Ok, no more talking. Shut up and look at the pictures...

Ok, funny story
We pulled over to enjoy the magnificent creation, when a tour bus pulled in as we were getting ready to move on. A bunch of German tourists disembarked. They were absolutely amazed by....The Harleys my friends were riding. They took pictures, laughed, talked, asked questions. We had a hard time getting out of there. Dale was laughing later saying he was really worried about dropping the bike or missing a gear or something while all those people were watching. They LOVED it when those big fat noisy bastards started up. I did point out that the Tener had German tires on, one guy took a picture of them!
